Why choose Vodafone mobile?

Vodafone, it must be said, offers some of the best extras and additional features in the business from free entertainment passes to extended warranties to literally the best roaming options on any network. Let’s take a closer look.

  • Excellent range of handsets and SIM-only plans
  • Vodafone has its own network covering 98% of the UK population
  • 30-day free cancellation policy
  • Vodafone is the UK’s best network for international roaming
  • Red Entertainment offers free NOW TV, Spotify Premium or Sky Sports Mobile
  • Vodafone Passes offer unlimited data on a service of your choice
  • Extended 24-month warranty on all Apple devices
  • ‘Boost your plan’ as and when you need without upgrading
  • 15% off additional plans for you or other family members

Excellent range of handsets and SIM-only plans

As you’d expect, handsets from Apple, Samsung and Sony are present and correct – no surprises there as no provider would be fool enough not to stock the market leaders. We’re also glad to see Vodafone offering phones from Huawei. Huawei offers premium handsets for less money – call it budget-premium – so it’s a great option for the savvy shopper.

Vodafone also has handsets from Motorola, Blackberry and own-brand phones in the form of the Vodafone Smart V8 and Smart N8. Notable absences include LG, OnePlus and HTC, though it would be fair to say that these brands offer nothing substantially different from those Vodafone does stock. It has those bases covered.

Vodafone also offers a wide selection of SIM-only deals if you already have a handset you’re happy with. It essentially splits things into three levels: Essentials (small data, minutes and texts), Red Extra (moderate data with the option for additional passes – more on those further down), and Red Entertainment (huge data with the option of data passes and your choice of entertainment add-on).

Vodafone has its own network covering 98% of the UK population

Vodafone is one of four providers in the UK with its own physical network – the others being EE, Three and O2. All other providers piggyback onto one of these networks. While not measurably the ‘best’ network – if by ‘best’ we mean fastest data, widest coverage – there really isn’t much in it between any of these networks.

Vodafone covers 98% of the UK population. If you’re unsure of whether you’re covered you can use Vodafone’s coverage checker on its own website. Do bear in mind, however, that geographical coverage maps aren’t very good at predicting signal indoors, so if you have a friend or family member on Vodafone it may be worth having them round to see what signal’s like in various rooms. 98 times out of a hundred, though, you’re going to be fine.

30-day free cancellation policy

Vodafone offers a 30-day cancellation period – more than double the 14 days required of them under Consumer Contract Regulations. This means you’ll have plenty of time to ensure your new handset and/or SIM works as it should where it should.

The system works very simply, but if you’re returning a handset you’ll need to ensure it stays absolutely pristine prior to sending it back or Vodafone may quibble.

Vodafone is the UK’s best network for international roaming

Vodafone runs a vast telecoms empire around the world and it’s this, we believe, that has enabled it to offer such an overwhelming number of countries with either free or low-cost roaming available. You’ll get totally free roaming in 48 countries. They are:

Austria, Azores, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canary Islands, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark (incl. Faroe Islands), Estonia, Finland, France (incl. Corsica), French Guiana, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Guadeloupe, Guernsey, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Jersey, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Madeira, Martinique, Mayotte, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Reunion, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (incl. Balearic Islands), Sweden, San Marino, St Martin, Switzerland, Turkey and Vatican City.

For £6 extra on any day you actively use your services (data, calls, texts, though receiving calls and texts remains free), Vodafone offers 104 ‘Roam-further destinations. They are (brace yourself): Afghanistan, Albania, Andorra, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Armenia, Aruba, Australia, Bangladesh, Barbados, Bahrain, Bermuda, Bonaire, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, The British Virgin Islands, Cambodia, Canada, The Cayman Islands, Chile, China, Colombia, Congo, Democratic Republic of, Costa Rica, Curacao, Dominica, The Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Fiji, Georgia, Ghana, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kuwait, Laos, Lesotho, Macau, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Montserrat, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Oman, Pakistan, Panama, Papa New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Russia, Saba, Samoa, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Sint Eustatius, Sint Maarten, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent, Suriname, Swaziland, Tanzania, Taiwan, Thailand, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, Ukraine, Uruguay, US Virgin Islands, United Arab Emirates, USA (United States of America), Uzbekistan, Vanuatu and Vietnam.

It would be fair to say if you’re going abroad and it’s not to Bouvet Island, Vodafone has you covered.

Red Entertainment offers free NOW TV, Spotify Premium or Sky Sports Mobile

Vodafone offers essentially three levels with both its pay-monthly and SIM-only plans. ‘Essentials’ is your budget option, ‘Red Extra’ has more data and allows bolt-ons of free data for certain services, while ‘Red Entertainment’ offers the most data and comes with the option to add NOW TV, Spotify Premium or Sky Sports Mobile at no additional cost.

This is tremendously generous. These services all weigh in at around £8 per month each normally. You can only choose one, but all are worth having. A NOW TV Entertainment Pass offers you access to most of Sky’s TV offering barring movies and sport, Spotify Premium gives you unlimited music and Sky Sports Mobile. Granted you’ll need one of the top tariffs to get them but if you enjoy one of these services that’s going to make it all the more worthwhile.

Vodafone Passes offer unlimited data on a service of your choice

Vodafone Passes, not to be confused with the additional subscriptions to NOW TV, Sky Sports Mobile or Spotify Premium, are available to anyone taking out either a Red Extra or Red Entertainment-level. There are four of them in total, each allowing you to engage in a specific online activity without eating into your data allowance.

The Vodafone Video pass allows streaming of pretty much any popular video app without eating into your monthly allowance: YouTube, Netflix, Amazon, you name it. The Music Pass does the same for Apple Music, Deezer, Spotify et al, the Social Pass includes all popular social media channels and the Vodafone Chat Pass won’t count data used in WhatsApp, Facebook and… you get the idea.

It’s worth noting, however, that these are not free. They all cost between £5 and £7 extra per month. However, if you stream a lot of video when you’re out and about, say, they can provide better value for money than the required equivalent monthly data cap.

Extended 24-month warranty on all Apple devices

Like the title says. Standard Apple warranty on iPhones and iPads is one year. Vodafone offers you two.

‘Boost your plan’ as and when you need without upgrading

This is getting increasingly common these days – the ability to add or subtract from your service limits each month. This is useful if you need a lot more data one month, say, but not on an ongoing basis. It does sort of serve the same purpose as Vodafone’s passes, however – there’s definitely some crossover there.

Which you choose will largely come down to your own preference.

15% off additional plans for you or other family members

If you take out and additional SIM or handset deal once you’re already a Vodafone customer, you’ll get 15% off of every aspect of it from the regular monthly cost to any addition bolt-ons. BT Mobile and others offer similar, but generally these tend to apply only to SIMs. Here you can get additional iPhone Xs if your heart so desires… and that’s a hefty discount.
