Frequently asked questions
Vodafone’s SIM-only plans offer everything its phone contracts do, minus the phone. They can be a flexible, convenient and affordable way joining one of the UK’s most established mobile operators. You can compare all of its latest packages above.
Can I get unlimited data?
Vodafone doesn’t offer unlimited data plans as standard, but there are several data caps to choose from, each designed for various level of use.
Can I add more data to my Vodafone SIM?
Yes, if you reach your data limit you can add extra data (for an additional fee) to use over 30 days or until your next allowance is available. If you consistently go over your limit you can choose to upgrade to a plan with more data. Contact Vodafone’s customer services or go in store for more information.
Can use my Vodafone SIM abroad?
You can use your minutes, texts and data in dozens of European and international destinations for an additional, daily fee with the Vodafone EuroTraveller or WorldTraveller add-ons.
These are opt-in services that will continue to run while you’re away or until you opt-out. EuroTraveller and WorldTraveller can be added to or removed from your plan over the phone or by text message. You should check with Vodafone before you travel for the latest prices, rules and restrictions.
Standard roaming charges
If you use your SIM card for travelling without the EuroTraveller or WorldTraveller add-ons, Vodafone’s standard roaming charges will apply. Going online or calling and texting someone while abroad can be expensive, so check the Vodafone website for details on current rates and international charges.
Can I keep my number?
Yes, you’ll be given a temporary number when you join but can replace it with your existing number after you receive your SIM. You’ll need to ask your old provider for your PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) to enable the switch.
When you have this, you can transfer your number using the switching form on the Vodafone website. It may take a day or two for your number to transfer, and you may experience a loss of service during this period.

Vodafone friends and family discount
You, and up to five of your friends or family, can save up to 20% on phone bundles and 12-month SIM-only plans with the Vodafone Employee Advantage (VEA) scheme. To qualify for the VEA scheme, you – or one of your friends and family – need to work for one of the many companies and organisations that are partnered with Vodafone.
This includes the NHS, Argos and Halifax bank, but you should check with an employer’s HR department to ensure it’s a registered partner and for up to date information.
If you’re eligible, you can apply for the discount online within the first 30 days of starting your Vodafone plan. For more information on the VEA scheme, visit the Vodafone website.
Red+ is shared plan designed to let families manage their collective mobile usage with a single bill. Shared plans can included up to nine family members or devices and, according to Vodafone, could save families up to 15% on their overall bill.
You'll need to join Vodafone on a Red Bundle, Red Value Bundle or a Red SIM only plan with between 1GB and 25GB of UK data to qualify for Red+. You’ll find the latest deals at the top of this page. Once you’re a Vodafone member, you can set up a shared plan by calling 08080 408 408 or visiting your local Vodafone shop.
Can I change my plan?
If you’re on a 12-month SIM-only plan you can upgrade at anytime but you can’t change to a cheaper package until your minimum-term is up. Vodafone’s rolling 30-day plans are far more flexible as they can be upgraded, downgraded or cancelled whenever you want.
Does Vodafone do credit checks for SIM-only plans?
Yes. If you have bad credit you may want to consider Vodafone’s pay-as-you-go (PAYG) service as an alternative. On PAYG plans you can still get set allowances of minutes, texts and data when you top up. Visit the Vodafone website for more information on pay-as-you-go tariffs or to order your free PAYG SIM.
How good is Vodafone’s 4G coverage?
UK providers continue to rollout 4G services, so coverage is always improving. You can check Vodafone’s coverage in your area through its website. A March 2015 Ofcom report estimated that Vodafone’s 4G services covered 65% of UK premises and achieved and average download speed of 14.7Mbps.
Can I upgrade to 4G?
Yes, if you sign up to a 3G Vodafone plan now, you can choose to upgrade to a 4G package at a later date.
Does Vodafone allow tethering?
Yes and there’s no limit on how much of your data allowance you can use while tethering to other devices. Tethering often and to multiple devices can increase data consumption so keep an eye on your usage to avoid excess charges. Vodafone will text you when you’ve used 80% of your data allowance and again when you’ve used 100%.
What are Vodafone entertainment packs?
Vodafone’s entertainment packs are added perks for signing up to select 4G plans. You can choose from a free Spotify Premium subscription, NOW TV Entertainment Pass or Sky Sports Mobile TV subscription. Entertainment packs are optional and can be claimed once your plan has been set up.
