How to switch from Sky to TalkTalk

Thursday, December 22nd 2016

Feeling the financial burden of being a Sky customer? Sky is one of the biggest – and most expensive – TV providers, so if you want a cheaper broadband and TV deal, then TalkTalk may be the provider for you.

If you are a Sky customer deciding to switch providers, here is a step-by-step guide about taking the plunge from Sky to TalkTalk. From who to contact to how long it takes, we have all the answers to your questions.

Step 1: Decide which services you want to switch

This seems like an obvious first step, but TalkTalk has more services on offer than just phone and broadband, it also sells TV and mobile SIMs, which can all be bought together in a lovely, neat quad bundle. This will work out cheaper and less hassle than having your services from different providers.

With that in mind, if you are happy with some of Sky’s services – its TV packages are rather good after all – you should make sure you mention that when you speak to TalkTalk.

Step 2: Compare and choose your TalkTalk deal

Chances are you’ll feel a bit like a kid in a sweetshop picking a new deal from TalkTalk. In order to attract new customers, broadband providers will sell packages with great exclusive deals, gifts or a period of free service, and TalkTalk is no exception. Make sure you have a good look through what TalkTalk offers and make sure you’re getting the best deal possible.

Sky has similar broadband packages to TalkTalk, so you should have a good idea of what you need. TalkTalk has both standard and fibre broadband, so if you’ve been finding your current connection not quite fast enough for your online activities, perhaps it’s time for a speed increase – go on, treat yourself.

Once you’ve chosen what you want from TalkTalk, it’s time to get in touch; you can do this through our availability checker. Once you’ve signed up, TalkTalk will do the rest of the legwork for you. You’ll receive information regarding any engineer visits, when you can expect your equipment to arrive, and a date for your new service to start.

Step 3: TalkTalk will contact Sky

There’s no need to have an awkward “it’s not you, it’s me” break up conversation with Sky, TalkTalk will do all that for you. You’ll receive a letter from Sky after it’s received word of your departure clarifying which services you’re switching, when the switchover is going to take place and whether you need to pay any charges or not.

Watch out for cancellation fees

If you’re still within the minimum period of your Sky contract, you will be charged cancellation fees. How much these fees will amount to is calculated by how many months you had left on your contract when you cancelled.

The length of your contract depends on which services you chose. Broadband contracts are generally 12 or 18 months' long. Check your original paperwork or online Sky account if you’re not sure how long you’ve got left.

We would advise that you only cancel your contract with Sky once your minimum term is up, unless it’s imperative that you switch right now.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to wait to switch?

It depends on how long you have to wait until your contract ends with Sky. It is best to switch when the contract is coming to an end, mainly to avoid any early termination charges.

Can I keep my Sky TV?

If you love what Sky has to offer on the TV front, then you can keep the Sky TV package. However, if you are looking to save money, you may want to get the full package from TalkTalk, as it will work out cheaper.

Can I keep my Sky number?

You will need to get in touch with TalkTalk, who will check whether you can retain your current number or if a new line is required in your property. If a new line is required, you will need to choose a convenient time for an engineer to come to your home to install it.

Can I still watch Sky TV channels with TalkTalk TV?

TalkTalk TV offers you two packages, TV and TV Plus. Unfortunately, you don’t get the variety of channels that Sky offers, but you do get seven Sky channels with the TV Plus plan, including Sky 1 and Sky News. You don't, however, get Sky Atlantic, although you can subscribe to Now TV through the TalkTalk TV box.

Conclusion

Sky is still king of the TV world, with a wide array of channels and programming, but it comes at a high cost. TalkTalk does not offer such a glamorous TV experience, but if you are looking to cut costs, it could be a good solution, especially as there are some Sky channels on offer if you take TalkTalk’s TV Plus package.
