How to switch from TalkTalk to BT

Are you a TalkTalk customer looking to switch to another provider? BT offers some great extras, including BT Sport, and access to over five million hotspots around the country.

Switching providers isn’t as complicated as you think. Here is a simple step-by-step guide on how to make your move to BT.

Step 1: Know which services you have to switch

First note that TalkTalk services come as a bundle – you cannot have TalkTalk TV without TalkTalk broadband and phone. BT works in the same way - you cannot have BT TV without BT broadband. So be prepared to swap all your services together.

It is generally cheaper and simpler to buy a three-in-one package, rather than just one service. It’s much less hassle dealing with one provider, in this case BT, rather than several. Plus it will cut down on your paper bills, as you’ll get just one monthly bill.

Step 2: Compare and choose a new BT deal

TalkTalk operates on the Openreach network so availability should be the same. BT offers a faster fibre service of 52Mb, as well as the top option of 76Mb, and all the packages are unlimited. If you want a TV package, there are several available, plus you have the option to bolt on extras such as Sky Cinema and Sky Sport.

Step 3: Wait for a letter from BT and TalkTalk

You don’t need to get in contact with TalkTalk to tell it that you’re leaving, BT will do that for you. You’ll receive letters from both BT and TalkTalk explaining what’s happening and whether you’ve got any early termination fees to pay. These letters will tell you what services have changed and what is staying the same, and the date of your switch.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a charge for cancelling my TalkTalk contract?

You will only be charged if you cancel your contract before the minimum period. So, it’s wise to cancel when your contract is coming to an end. Keep in mind you’ll need to give TalkTalk 30 days’ notice.

How long will the switch take?

This will depend on when your contract ends with TalkTalk. BT states it will take two weeks from the date of purchase for the switchover to complete. For your convenience, you are allowed to request a later date.

Can I keep the same landline number?

BT will tell you whether you will require a new phone line or not. If you do, BT will then arrange for an engineer to come to your home and install a line.

Can I keep some of my TalkTalk services?

No. You have to take BT Broadband to get BT TV – as you do with TalkTalk. The easiest thing is to switch your entire package.
