POP Telecom review 2017

Claire Nottage
Monday, January 9th 2017

POP Telecom, although not one of the best known names in broadband, has been trading for many years. Its focus is on providing cheap, straightforward broadband and phone deals.

With the usual choice of standard or fibre broadband, POP offers a range of unlimited broadband and calls packages, along with a selection of mobile deals. To see if it’s worth a look, read our guide.

Pros and cons

  • Inclusive call packages
  • Mobile minutes bundled in
  • Tailored solutions
  • Not that cheap
  • Confusing mobile options
  • Long broadband contracts

What we like

Inclusive call packages

With providers increasingly not offering any inclusive calls at all with their broadband packages, it is pleasant to see that POP telecom includes anytime calls with many of its packages – and for only a few pounds more.

Mobile minutes bundled in

As well as bundling up Anytime Calls, POP also offers packages with 1000 minutes to mobiles. With calls to mobiles invariably costing considerably more than calls to other landlines, this is an interesting move, although with a flat rate of £20 per month for this add-on, you have to be certain of making the most of it.

Tailored solutions

POP Telecom advertises a range of special tailored solutions for broadband, although the option to buy online is unclear and POP advises that you call directly to discuss options. However, we like the fact that POP Telecom is prepared to cater for more niche markets and their specific requirements – including gamers, pensioners, rural residents, landlords and students.

What we don’t like

Not that cheap

Now that the Advertising Standards Agency requires broadband providers to include line rental in their monthly pricing, there is often little difference in cost when it comes to looking at one providers’ prices against another. POP Telecom’s prices sit fairly comfortably alongside those of other broadband providers, with often only a few pounds difference either way.

What differentiates budget and premium providers now is the extras, like customer support, free wi-fi and security software. POP offers customer service 9-6pm Monday to Friday and no free wi-fi or security software. It’s a bare bones package for much the same price you would pay for a more comprehensive package.

Confusing mobile bundles

POP telecom does offer mobile services but they are a bit odd. You can choose from a 4GB SIM or a 10GB SIM, both of which come with unlimited texts and calls to 01, 02, 03 landlines and all UK mobiles. Alternatively, you can choose a deal that comes with unlimited texts and minutes only, and a handset – but no data. There are two handsets to choose from – a Nokia 108 or an LG K4 – there are no iPhones or Samsungs on offer here. To offer a mobile deal without data strikes us as very odd, but if that appeals to you, then this might be worth a look.

Very long broadband contracts

With most broadband providers now offering just 12 or 18-month contracts, the 24-month contract required by POP Telcom seems excessive. You need to make sure you are happy with the deal before you commit as the termination fees for this length of contract will be considerable if you decide after a month or two that you are not happy. Even Pop Telecom’s mobile deals are 24 months long.

Conclusion

With long contracts, pricing around average and little in the way of extras, POP Telecom has little to mark it apart from other broadband providers. We would recommend that you consider looking at other providers first ¬– such as Sky or BT – before signing up to POP, to see what you could get for your money elsewhere.
