Sky has a good repuation whereas TalkTalk has had customer service problems in the past, but they both offer very similar broadband and phone services. It's only when you throw TV into the mix that Sky leaps ahead. Here are all the detail sto help you decide.

Sky's broadband speeds include up to 17Mbps for Sky, and up to 38Mbps (Sky Fibre) and up to 76Mbps (Sky Fibre Max). Visitors to our site have achieved an average download speed of 5.9Mbps in speed tests with Sky Broadband and 21.9Mbps with Sky Fibre.


TalkTalk's broadband speed starts with a speed of up to 17Mbps for standard services but, as anyone with a current broadband connection probably knows, actual speeds can differ greatly from those advertised. TalkTalk customers achieved an average ADSL download speed of 6.8Mbps, and an average fibre download speed of 25.1Mbps. TalkTalk also offers the two fibre speeds of 38Mbps and 76Mbps (known as Faster Fibre).

Sky offers three broadband services on 12- or 18-month contracts, depending on whether you choose broadband or fibre. The options include the standard up to 17Mbps Sky Broadband Unlimited, the up to 38Mbps Sky Fibre Unlimited, and the fastest – the up to 76Mbps Sky Fibre Max. Sky also offers a version of its 38Mbps Sky Fibre package that comes with a 25MB data limit.

At TalkTalk, your options start with Fast Broadband, which is a standard up to 17Mbps service with unlimited downloads that doesn’t include calls, on a 12, 18 or 24-month contract.

TalkTalk also offers Faster Fibre – either up to 38Mbps or up to 76Mbps. All TalkTalk's broadband contracts come on a choice of 12, 18 or 24-month contracts and their prices include line rental.

Sky customers enjoy higher average service satisfaction according to Ofcom. Those who reported issues, rated Sky’s advisors above average on understanding the problem, keeping the customer informed and logging details.


TalkTalk’s competitive prices can’t hide its main association – poor customer service. Despite efforts to boost customer service and remedy its reputation, it continues to sit at the top of Ofcom’s table of most complained about broadband providers.

Technology and equipment


The quality of the router supplied to deliver your broadband is important to your overall internet performance. Sky customers get the Sky Hub free with all broadband services (£9.95 delivery applies), which is wi-fi enabled and includes Smart Signal technology to scan for interference and select the best wireless channel.


TalkTalk throws in its new Super Router for free with all of its broadband packages. There is no delivery charge, although for fibre customers there is a £50 set-up fee.

Extra features


Sky offers a security tool called Broadband Shield, which is free to all broadband customers. Unlimited Sky broadband customers also get access to public wi-fi at Cloud hotspots throughout the country, which is a great way to preserve data on your smartphone or tablet.

Sky Broadband Shield is also included with all services as standard. The parental control software allows you stipulate what kind of content can be viewed on every device connected to your home network through age categories akin to movie ratings (PG, 13 and 18).


TalkTalk is one of the most security-conscious providers on the market and offers free HomeSafe software to all broadband customers. It is designed to help users block any websites you define as unsuitable on any device in the home.

It is particularly useful for parents looking to limit what their children can see – permanently, or just during homework time, for example.


Sky and TalkTalk are close rivals on some broadband features, but polar opposites on others.
