What’s in the basic Sky TV bundle?
Sky's Basic TV package is called the Sky Original Bundle, and is the bare bones of its many flexible TV options. It includes a great selection of popular channels, and can be customised with other channel packs.
Here's exactly what you’ll get with the basic Sky TV bundle, from channels, prices, upgrades, and all the other options that come with the service.
The Sky Original Bundle
Sky used to have six different channel packs, and customers taking the basic package could choose any one of them as part of their subscription. These days Sky uses a simpler system, and all customers get over 35 channels as standard, plus the option to add extra channels with Sky Sports and Sky Movies.
With Sky's basic bundle, you’ll get the channels outlined above, the ability to pause, rewind, and record live TV thanks to a free Sky+ HD box, access to Sky’s on-demand service, the free app Sky Go, and 11 free-to-air high definition channels - and the option to add the free Sky Broadband Lite package with 2GB usage and weekend calls.
The Sky Original bundle starts at £15 per month, and comes on a 12-month contract. If you choose to take up the offer of free broadband and calls you'll also need to pay £16.40 a month line rental.

Sky TV channels
Despite this being a ‘basic’ TV package, there is nothing particularly basic about the variety of its channels. You get the big hitting entertainment channels, like Sky Atlantic, Sky 1 and Sky Living as well as lifestyle, news and international channels. You’ll also receive over 240 free-to-air channels and 11 free-to-air HD channels, so you’ve plenty to be getting on with.
If you’re a sports fan, you can enhance your basic Sky TV bundle with Sky’s sport channels.
The Sky Sports add-on starts at £25.50 per month and comes with seven dedicated sports channels, including Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports News and Sky Sports F1, and the most recent addition, Sky Sports 5. If you need your football, rugby, or golf fix, the Sky Sports pack presents a great option for building on your basic Sky TV bundle.
If sports aren’t your thing, you can upgrade your basic TV bundle with a movie package instead.
The Sky Movies add-on starts at £17 per month and features 11 Sky Movies channels, including Sky Movies Premiere and Sky Movies Disney, and around 800 movies to watch on-demand. This is a great option for movie buffs looking for a full cinema experience at home (except without the sticky floors and endless trailers).
What are my alternatives?
If you’ve decided that Sky TV just isn’t for you, there are still plenty of alternatives out there, including BT TV, TalkTalk TV and Virgin Media, each of which offers a cheap entry-level package.
Sky has the widest range of TV channels in the UK, but it’s not the cheapest option for a starter pack. There’s plenty of scope for expansion though, so you’ll be able to add more channels and services as time goes by.
