Broadband in Bedford
In addition to a wide range of businesses and a population of almost 80,000, Bedford is home to a campus of the University of Bedfordshire. But to ensure that its digital connections continue to serve those who work, study and live there, the town may need to improve its level of broadband access.

Lace and airships
Modern Bedford has grown from medieval roots as a small rural settlement specialising in wool production. From the 16th Century onwards the town played an important part in England’s lace industry, and attracted skilled crafts people from afar. In the 19th Century the town changed again and became known for its engineering industry. By the 20th Century the town was producing huge airships in the Cardington Hangars.
In 2002 a Bedford company, Advanced Technologies Group, looked set to rekindle airship production in the town as part of its ambitious plans to use them to provide mobile phone and internet coverage to remote areas. The plans unfortunately fell through when the company went into administration.
Looking to the future, thousands of new homes are planned for the town over the coming decade, as well as new commercial areas. Parts of the town centre area are also due for redevelopment.
The future looks bright, but before local planners get too carried away with further expansion, they may need to look at the quality of internet access on its outer edges. This will play a major part on how attractive Bedford is in the future, both to residents and new businesses.
Broadband in Bedford’s central areas is currently at a reasonable standard. Speeds range from a respectable 8Mbps in some residential areas (which is close to the national average), up to an impressive 36Mbps close to the University. But areas on the outskirts still appear to be suffering from patchy connectivity.
Shortstown, Workhouse End, Brickhill, Dearne Walk and Biddenham are amongst those areas where households are encountering slow spots of around 2Mbps to 3Mbps, despite BT’s 2011 roll-out of super-fast broadband technology to more than 30,000 premises in Bedford. Hopefully, these patches of slow speed broadband will be rectified by future upgrades.
