Cable.co.uk comments on today's Ofcom BT landline price cut announcement

  • Ofcom announces a £5 per month price cut for all BT landline-only customers in the UK
  • Price cut designed to protect vulnerable people who rely on their landlines and to reverse inflation-busting price hikes
  • 80% of landline-only customers are with BT, other providers are expected to follow suit

Tuesday, 28 February 2017: Landline-only customers – often elderly or vulnerable people who’ve been with the same provider for years, get poor value for money compared to those who take bundled phone, TV and broadband services. Original Ofcom press release can be found here.

Commenting on the findings Dan Howdle, consumer telecoms analyst at broadband advice site Cable.co.uk, says:

"While these costs are absorbed easily into the prices of bundled packages including broadband and TV, proportionately they have affected most landline-only customers, which correlated strongly with those that are least able to cope with the added costs."

"While it's true that BT has added some value in terms of nuisance call blocking and other calling features, with the underlying wholesale costs coming down steadily for the last ten years, these price hikes have become increasingly hard to justify. Ofcom has stepped in and done exactly what was needed."
