Cable.co.uk comments on BT/Openreach legal separation agreement

  • BT agrees to legally separate from Openreach
  • Opeanreach will become a distinct company with its own management with the legal purpose to “serve all customers equally”
  • Ofcom said the changes address all its competition concerns and it will no longer need to impose changes through regulation

Friday, 10 March 2017: The legal separation, which will begin this year, will see around 32,000 BT employees transferred to Openreach.

The new company will also have its own branding, which will not feature the BT logo, and its own board.

Commenting on the findings Dan Howdle, consumer telecoms analyst at broadband advice site Cable.co.uk, says:

“With the separation now going ahead, Openreach will finally be committed to acting equally in the interests of all providers, allowing them finally to act on behalf of their own customers and to affect future strategy and investment decision-making associated with the Openreach network.

“his is a good day for the average broadband, TV and phone customer too, who will enjoy all the benefits the stoking of competition in a fairer marketplace is likely to bring, without suffering the costs and delays to infrastructural rollout a full separation would have incurred. We should not, however, rule out a full separation happening at some point in the future"
