Cable.co.uk comments on Which? and OpenSignal's 4G mobile connection research

  • Consumer champion Which? and OpenSignal, a company specialising in mapping wireless coverage, have today released research revealing that 4G mobile connection varies wildly across the UK
  • The research compared 20 of the UK's biggest cities and found that Middlesborough was the best city for 4G access, with 83% availability
  • Bournemouth was the worst, with 68% availability
  • The average overall 4G availability across the UK was found to be 65%
  • Mobile users could only access 4G nearly two-thirds of the time

The full findings of the report will be available on OpenSignal's website from 00.01 on Wednesday 3 May 2017. Which? has issued an embargoed press release (jamie.clarke@which.co.uk 020 7770 7615 / 07970 132 811).

Commenting on the findings of Which? and OpenSignal's research, Dan Howdle, consumer telecoms analyst at Ofcom-accredited broadband advice site Cable.co.uk, says:

"The majority of this data came from people’s homes and places of work. With mobile signals generally poorer indoors, these figures are therefore likely to be lower than the actual geographical coverage or that advertised by providers. It is, however, a much better representation of the actual day-to-day experience of users than almost anything else.

“If you’re worried about getting poor signal and aren’t sure which provider to choose, it’s a good idea to ask neighbours and co-workers which network they’re on and what kind of service they get, and use their answers to make an informed choice.”

Notes to editors

OpenSignal partnered with Which? to examine 4G mobile performance in the UK. For this particular report, 535,415,861 datapoints were collected from 30,793 users between 1 December 2016 and 28 February 2017.
