Virgin Media announces £3bn investment in it UK fibre broadband network

13 February 2015: This morning, Virgin Media announced that it is to invest £3bn in its UK fibre broadband network – the largest single investment in broadband infrastructure in the UK for a decade. In doing so it will create 6,000 new jobs, 1,000 of which will be apprenticeships.

Dan Howdle, telecoms expert and editor-in-chief of telecoms advice site Cable.co.uk said:

“Virgin Media currently reaches around half of all UK households with its own fibre broadband network. £3bn is a staggering investment. It dwarfs the £1.7bn the government has invested in the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) fibre rollout project undertaken alongside BT.

“However, the money will unlikely result in fast broadband for those who live in rural or difficult to reach communities. Rather, Virgin Media is playing catch-up to BT’s openreach network and as such will likely roll things out profit-end-first.

“Greater competition can only be a good thing, but most of those who will soon be served by Virgin Media’s network will already be able to get superfast fibre broadband through BT openreach.”
