BT SIM only explained
BT Mobile has a variety of SIM only plans with different allowances of inclusive minutes, texts, and data. Cast your eye above to see the deals, or continue downwards for answers to all your BT Mobile questions.
What network does BT Mobile use?
BT Mobile uses the EE network.
BT Mobile is an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) and therefore needs to use another mobile provider’s network to carry its calls, texts, and data.
Is BT Mobile the same as EE?
Not exactly. It’s rather complicated.
At the beginning of 2015 BT agreed to purchase EE, including its mobile, broadband, and TV services. However, the actual sale has not yet completed.
At the moment BT simply uses EE’s network – it doesn’t own EE. This situation is expected to change in mid 2016 and will likely affect the BT Mobile service in some (as yet unknown) way.
Is BT Mobile 4G?
All BT Mobile plans are 4G as standard. This has two practical benefits. For one, you won’t have to pay to ‘upgrade’ to a 4G plan like you do with some providers; and for another, downloads will complete more quickly and you’ll be less likely to experience buffering when streaming film or video.
What is coverage like?
Around 99% of the UK population is covered by BT Mobile’s 4G service. Its 3G service – which is what you’ll connect to if you can’t get 4G – covers approximately 98% of the UK population.
These coverage percentages are ‘population’ based and not ‘area’ based, so it’s possible that some less populated rural areas of the UK will have no BT Mobile coverage whatsoever.
Use the BT Mobile coverage checker to see whether or not you can get coverage where you are.
What’s the cheapest BT Mobile deal?
Prices change on a regular basis so the best way to find the cheapest deal is to arrange the above BT Mobile deals in order of price, starting with the cheapest. However, there is one sure-fire way to ensure you get the cheapest BT Mobile plan…
BT Mobile is cheaper for existing customers
If you’re a BT broadband or BT TV customer you get a discount on the monthly price of any BT Mobile plan. This is one of the best (and easiest) ways to save money on BT Mobile.
Does my phone have to be unlocked?
If you purchased your handset from another provider, such as Vodafone or O2, then it’s highly likely that you’ll need to unlock your phone to use it on BT Mobile.
There are several ways to unlock your mobile. The easiest way is to contact the provider with whom your mobile is locked and request an unlock code. Alternatively, you can visit a mobile phone unlocking specialist, either online or on the high street. Bear in mind that mobile unlocking is rarely free of charge.
Does it allow tethering?
You aren’t allowed to tether on any BT Mobile plan. Tethering is when you share your mobile data with other devices, like your laptop or game console. If you do attempt to tether on BT Mobile you may be disconnected from the network.
Only a few providers allow tethering
The following providers will let you tether:
- Tesco Mobile
Can I use BT Mobile abroad?
You can use your BT Mobile outside the UK in nearly every country. Exceptions are listed on the BT website, and include Somalia and Eritrea.
All BT Mobile plans come with an automatic roaming cap of £35. This means you shouldn’t be charged more than this during a particular month when using your phone abroad.
If you want to browse mobile internet abroad you can purchase an international data bundle. These bundles contain a set amount of data (a fairly small amount, admittedly) to use while away from the UK.
Can I watch BT Sport on BT Mobile?
You can. When you join BT Mobile you get free access to BT Sport Lite – even if you don’t have BT broadband or TV.
To watch BT Sport Lite through BT Mobile you need to download the BT Sport App to your handset. You can get the app from either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, depending on the make and model of your phone.
However, you can only watch BT Sport Lite on your BT Mobile phone – you won’t be able to watch it on TV without a workaround.
Can I combine BT Mobile with broadband?
Rather than buying BT Mobile on its lonesome you can bundle it with several of BT’s other services.
BT has a range of different bundles available that combine its four services – TV, broadband, home phone, and mobile – into one easy-to-manage package. You can find these quad-play packages on our BT bundles comparison page.
Does BT do mobile broadband?
BT doesn’t do mobile broadband. Its plans are tailored for mobile phones and tablets and include set allowances of minutes, texts and data – none of its plans are data-only and none of its SIM cards are compatible with mobile broadband routers or dongles.
Can I cancel BT Mobile early?
You can cancel for free within 14 days of purchasing any BT Mobile plan. You don’t even need to think of a reason: you can simply call BT and cancel, no questions asked.
Cancel after 14 days and you’ll be charged termination fees
Once the 14-day period has expired you will be charged for cancelling while within contract. These termination fees will be more expensive the earlier you cancel, so if you cancel after the second month, you’ll have to pay more to cancel than if you cancel during the tenth month, for example.
You can cancel for free if BT increases in price
If BT Mobile increases the price you pay for your SIM only deal more than the standard rate of inflation, you are free to leave without penalty. BT Mobile has to give you 30 days’ notice in advance of any price rise, so there’s ample time to make a decision.
