How to compare giffgaff SIM-only deals

Wednesday, September 24th 2014

Giffgaff is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator with a thriving online community. Its SIM-only deals are some of the best around, with low monthly prices and generous tariffs. So how do you find the right deal? Our comparison page lists all the best giffgaff SIM-only deals available. Here’s how to compare.

It’s easy to compare giffgaff SIM-only plans

The compare page lists giffgaff SIM-only plans in order of price, with the cheapest first. You can reorder the list by clicking the column titles. For example, if you want to order plans by the number of inclusive minutes, you simply click the ‘inclusive minutes’ column header. Once you’ve found a plan, navigate to the right of the row and click the blue ‘see deal’ button to be taken to giffgaff’s page where you can complete your order.

Coverage

Giffgaff uses O2 to carry its minutes, texts, and data. To see if you’ll be covered, you can use the coverage checker hosted on giffgaff’s website, which you can find here.

Check the detail

It can be tempting to dive straight in and pick the first deal that comes to hand. But if you want to get the best deal for your money, it’s worth closely checking the detail of each plan.

Some plans are data-only

Giffgaff doesn’t just do SIM-only deals for phones; it also does data-only plans for tablets and mobile broadband routers. These SIM plans won’t let you make calls or send texts if you use them in a smartphone or phablet. Make doubly certain that you’ve picked the right SIM before you click the blue ‘see deal’ button and complete your order.

Unlimited data plans are subject to traffic management

Unlimited plans sound great on the surface. But in truth those unlimited plans are subject to a traffic management policy. Giffgaff’s traffic management system slows down users who consume a considerable amount of data in a small period of time. So if you intend to download films and games day after day, you may find your connection slowing to a crawl.

4G coverage is still limited

Giffgaff is an MVNO, carried on the O2 network. Currently, O2’s 4G network is still limited, and mainly restricted to urban areas like London, so you may not be able to get coverage from the high-speed wireless network where you are; or at least not yet. Rollout is still underway, so if you can’t currently get 4G, it may be worth waiting or looking at another provider if it’s your greatest concern.

Why choose giffgaff SIM-only?

A thriving community-based support network

Giffgaff’s online community is easily the most active of any UK mobile provider. Instead of offering the traditional customer support system (such as call centre help lines) giffgaff relies on its customers to help one another via their online forum. There are even incentives for customers to help one another out, with vouchers and other bonuses being offered to those who frequently take part in the community.

Unlimited data

Giffgaff has a wide range of unlimited data plans for smartphones, and is one of only a handful of mobile providers to do so. These plans let you browse online as much as you like, so there’s no need to worry about hitting data caps and being charged for excess usage. It should be borne in mind that these unlimited plans are subject to traffic management however.

One-month contracts for all SIM-only deals

Rather than having a number of SIMs on different contract lengths, all giffgaff SIM-only deals are one-month rolling contracts. This means you can leave whenever you like without incurring penalties for early contract termination. You will, however, need to give 30 days’ notice of cancellation, so you may still need to pay for a full month of service.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • A great range of unlimited plans
  • Short, 30-day contracts
  • Free calls to other giffgaff numbers

Cons

  • Traffic management on unlimited data plans
  • No option for unlimited minutes
  • 4G coverage remains limited

Which giffgaff SIM-only deal is right for me?

It can be difficult to choose what kind of plan is best. To narrow your choices, ask yourself these three questions.

Do I love to chat?

If your favourite thing to do with your phone is call up friends and family and talk the night away, then you’ll want to choose a plan with a high inclusive minutes allowance. Unfortunately giffgaff do not offer an unlimited minutes plan, but all calls made to other giffgaff numbers are free of charge. So if you can convince all your friends and family to switch to giffgaff, you can make all the calls you like.

Would I mainly use my phone to browse online?

If you prefer browsing to talking, you’ll need a plan with a high data allowance. Luckily, giffgaff offers a large range of unlimited data SIMs starting at fairly low monthly prices that are perfect for browsing and watching videos online. Just bear in mind that if you consume heavily you may find your connection slowed due to traffic management.

Am I on a tight budget?

Giffgaff is a good option for those on a limited budget. There are several cheap plans available, and while the allowances may be limited, they pose a great way to stay in touch when money is tight. There are also pay-as-you-go options available for infrequent users.

What will I need?

A compatible handset

To start using your giffgaff SIM, you’ll need a compatible smartphone. Practically every smartphone available in the UK is compatible with giffgaff, but there are a few exceptions. Older models may not work, and some Blackberry smartphones will require a Blackberry SIM (also available from giffgaff).

Reliable coverage

To make calls, send texts, and get online, you’ll need to be in an area with sufficient coverage. It can be easy to forget this when purchasing a SIM – but before you buy, be sure to use giffgaff’s coverage checker to ensure that you’ll be able to get coverage where you are.

An unlocked handset

If you purchased your handset from another provider, you may have to unlock it to use a giffgaff SIM. Giffgaff hosts an ‘unlockapedia’ on its website that answers several questions about phone unlocking, such as whether or not it’s illegal (it isn’t) and who can unlock your handset. You can find more information about phone unlocking here.

A Port Authorisation Code (PAC)

If you’re switching from another provider and want to keep your current mobile number, you’ll need to request your PAC code from your existing service provider. Once you have it, you’ll need to pass it on to giffgaff within 30 days to keep your number. Bear in mind that number porting isn’t always an option, so be sure to check before going to the trouble of requesting your code.

Six essential questions before you buy

  1. Do I have strong mobile coverage?
  2. Am I in a 4G area?
  3. Do I want unlimited data?
  4. Should I choose unlimited inclusive minutes?
  5. How much can I afford to pay monthly?
  6. Do I need to unlock my phone?

Cable.co.uk recommends

Before choosing a plan, we recommend casting your eye back over your previous mobile usage. Do you spend most of your time texting? Do you spend hours a day using mobile internet? Asking yourself these questions will help you choose a plan, and help you avoid future disappointment when your allowances simply aren’t generous enough.
