£1500 for a phone? Huawei and Porsche team up to create pricey handset
While we all were busy fawning over the triple camera in the Huawei P20 Pro, you may have missed the fact that the Porsche Design Huawei Mate Racing Sport phone was released at the same time (April).
Its name is a bit of a mouthful and the price is pretty hard to swallow as well. Brace yourself, are you sitting down? The Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS is now on sale in the UK at Carphone Warehouse and can be yours SIM-free for £1,499.
No we haven’t mistyped or added an extra digit, for a penny under £1,500 you can be the proud owner of a Porsche branded Android phone. What’s lurking under the hood to warrant such a chunky cost?
Well it’s pretty similar in terms of spec to the Huawei P20 Pro and Huawei Mate 10 Pro. It has a Leica triple camera with 40MP image capture, AI powered Kirin 970 processor and runs on Android 8.1 combined with the latest EMUI interface.
It certainly looks good, sporting a 6-inch 2K curved OLED screen with a minimalist feel and a stylish 8-edged 3D curved glass body.
Where does it differ? It has a dual fingerprint sensor, one of the back and one on the front in-screen. Just like the latest Samsung and Apple phones the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS enables wireless charging. So far, we haven’t mentioned anything that sets it apart from other flagship phones currently available for a much smaller price.
The internal storage and RAM are impressive. You get a whopping 256GB of internal storage so you’ll never need to look at a micro SD card again. It has 6GB of RAM so you won’t have much of a problem with opening, operating and switching between large apps. To enhance to the your entertainment experience, Huawei has added Dolby Atmos speakers under the hood.
Get a car for the same price
We don’t want to tell you what to do with your money, but it would be irresponsible of us not to tell you what else you can buy for the same amount of money. For starters, you could purchase a Macbook Pro 13-inch laptop and still have some change to buy some accessories, you could deck out your living room with IKEA furniture, or even buy an actual Porsche car on ebay. Okay, yes it needs a bit of work but it’s still a car.
After all the agro the iPhone X received for its high price tag (£999), it now seems cheap in comparison to the £1,499 that the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS will set you back.
Talking about the release of the phone, Jan Becker, CEO PORSCHE DESIGN Group, said: "Both Porsche Design and Huawei seek to imagine and develop products that stand for precision and perfection, intelligent functionality and highly sophisticated design.
“Our aim was to create an outstanding device that goes one step further. We believe we have reached this goal by taking our partnership to the next level."
While yes they did succeed in creating an ‘outstanding device’, the only thing that goes one step further is the price. To add insult to injury you can only buy the phone SIM-free so you’ll still have to find a SIM-only deal once you do get the phone in your hands.
Well, there is a plus side. At least you get a free wireless charger with £89.00 when you buy the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS from Carphone Warehouse. After you complete your purchase online the charger will be posted to your address 14 days later.
