Amazon launches 'powerful' new Fire TV streaming devices
Amazon has launched the next generation of its bestselling Fire TV streaming products.
The new Amazon Fire TV, a set-top box that supports 4K Ultra HD, and the Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote were announced yesterday.
The first Fire TV products were launched last year, allowing users to turn their television set into a smart TV and giving them access to on-demand services including Netflix, Amazon Video, BBC iPlayer and Demand 5.
Fire TV has since become the bestselling Amazon device category, with the Fire TV Stick quickly becoming Amazon’s fastest-selling product ever.
Amazon said the new Fire TV provides access to more 4K Ultra HD movies than any other device, as well as TV shows including Amazon original series Transparent and Netflix’s Narcos.
“The team has packed an incredible amount of technology and innovation into a tiny package,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com founder and CEO.
“The new Fire TV includes 4K support, more processing power, great selection, and exclusive features—for less than £80.
“The Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote brings voice search for less than £45. These are powerful devices at incredible prices.”
The voice search feature, previously available through an iOS or Android app, now also comes as a built-in feature of the Voice Remote, which comes with the new Fire TV Stick.
The remote allows users to speak the name of a movie, TV show, actor, director or genre instead of scrolling through menus or searching using an alphabet grid.
Fire TV also comes with X-Ray for Movies and TV Shows, a feature that gives viewers access to on-screen actor biographies, trivia and soundtracks.
The feature is exclusive to Amazon Video and powered by movie website IMDb.
Amazon has also today launched a range of tablets – the low-cost Fire, the Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 tablets, and the Fire Kids Edition tablet.
Mr Bezos added: “Today, we’re taking another step in our mission to deliver premium products at non-premium prices.
“The all-new Fire features a quad-core processor, is incredibly durable, and is backed by the Amazon content ecosystem, the new Amazon Underground, and Amazon customer service with Mayday Screen Sharing.
“Fire sets a new bar for what customers should expect from a low-cost tablet.”
