Amazon streaming service celebrates record-breaking festive period
Amazon enjoyed a record-breaking festive period for its devices, its series, and its streaming service.
More than three million new members worldwide joined Amazon Prime – which gives them unlimited access to tens of thousands of movies and TV series – during the third week of December alone.
Members of the streaming service, which has tens of millions of members worldwide, doubled their total viewing hours of Prime Video titles compared to 2014, with the Man in the High Castle its most watched TV series.
Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, said: “This was another great holiday season to be a Prime member, and we welcomed 3m new members in the third week of December alone.”
The Christmas break was also the best ever for Amazon devices, the company said, with double the number of devices sold compared to last year.
The all-new Fire tablet was the number one bestselling, product on Amazon.com since its introduction 15 weeks ago.
Amazon Echo and Fire TV Stick joined it among the top-five items ordered on Christmas Eve through the company’s Prime Now service.
Amazon said a record number of movies were watched on Prime Video in 2015, and a record number of songs were streamed with Prime Music during the holiday season.
Worldwide, Prime Music plays set an all-time record, increasing more than 350% compared to 2014.
Nearly 70% of Amazon.com customers shopped using a mobile device this holiday and the number of customers shopping on the mobile app more than doubled.
Amazon launched the next generation of its bestselling Fire TV streaming products in September, announcing the new Amazon Fire TV, a set-top box that supports 4K Ultra HD, and the Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote.
The first Fire TV products were launched in 2014, allowing users to turn their television set into a smart TV and giving them access to on-demand services including Netflix, Amazon Video, BBC iPlayer and Demand 5.
Fire TV since became the bestselling Amazon device category, with the Fire TV Stick quickly becoming Amazon’s fastest-selling product ever.
In December, it was announced that Sky Go was being added to the Amazon Appstore, allowing Sky TV customers to watch their favourite programmes on Amazon Fire tablets.
At the time Steve Rabuchin, vice president, Amazon Appstore, said: “We’re focused on adding the highest quality selection to our Appstore, and Sky has one of the strongest content catalogues in the UK.
“The addition of Sky Go to our store provides our customers with easy access to Sky’s first-class exclusive TV, movies and sports programming.
