Google Lens now available on default camera apps
Google has rolled out an update that allows users with certain Android phones to access a cool new feature through the camera app.
Google Lens lets you interact with the world around you via your phone’s camera, letting you find products online, copy and paste text, learn about landmarks and more.
Sony has confirmed that anyone with an Xperia XZ2 or XZ2 Compact can now access the feature directly through the default camera app thanks to the update, while anyone buying an XZ2 Premium will find it pre-installed.
Google’s own Pixel phones will also now let you access Google Lens through the camera app, as will newer LG, Motorola, Nokia and OnePlus devices. If your phone isn’t compatible, fear not – Google says it will be launching a dedicated Lens app on the Play Store soon.
Other features included in the new update are Style Match and Smart Text Selection.
Style Match lets you scan objects around you and shows you things similar to them, so you could scan a shirt and be shown other clothing items with a similar look and quick links for buying them. Smart Text Selection is the feature that allows you to scan text on a book, sign, poster etc, copy it and paste it into a text field on your phone.
You’ll notice that one of the big names missing from the above list of Android phone manufacturers is Samsung. That’s because its latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S9, boasts similar features courtesy of the Bixby Vision app.
The app, which is built into the S9’s camera, can tell you how many calories are in your lunch, translate a sign and even allow you to try on makeup with AR.
Sounds great, but when we tested some of the features for ourselves, we found that Bixby’s grasp of French wasn’t great and that it couldn’t tell the difference between a water bottle and a piece of salmon.
