Asda Mobile offers pay as you go reminders and automatic top-up
There's one big annoyance about a pay-as-you-go tariff: the sinking feeling you get when you need to use your phone and discover that you've run out of credit.
But now Asda Mobile customers can not only set up a recurring regular top-up, but can get a top-up automatically when their balance runs low. Just pick an amount - £5, say - and when your balance falls that low, it will automatically be topped up by a sum that you've chosen in advance. You can set up or stop a recurring top-up or automatic top-up with a phone call at any time, and can set your top-up to recur every 7, 10, 14 or 30 days.
A large part of the point of pay-as-you-go is that it keeps prices low for low users. With this in mind, when you set up your low balance top-up, Asda Mobile will ask you for a 30-day spend limit. This means that in a 30-day period, the company won't top you up by more than your selected value, meaning there shouldn't be any nasty surprises.
You'll get a text message from Asda 24 hours before it tries to take the payment for a recurring top-up, and another text once the payment has been taken. Recurring top-ups work with the company's standard rate charges.
You can have both a low balance top-up and a recurring top-up at the same time, something the company recommends if you are a high user.
Top up as-and-when
But you can of course still top-up on an as-and-when basis with an Asda Mobile top-up card or voucher, or by contacting the company phone or text.
We don't often write about Asda Mobile, but the fact is that the company offers an excellent low-cost no-frills service, and it always gets excellent reviews and feedback from customers online. It doesn't offer handsets - just SIM-only deals - although you can of course buy a handset separately through the main Asda supermarket website or in-store.
There's no contract, so you can ramp your usage up and down at will without feeling that you're wasting money; and all Asda Mobile's SIMs come with 10 minutes, 10 texts and 10MB of data free, so you can put the company to the test before you commit yourself too much.
Asda runs its services across the EE network, which consistently wins in speed tests against the competition and is the most reliable service too. It also comes top in terms of both population coverage and geographic coverage, making it worth checking out if you live anywhere remote.
The bundles available start at a rock-bottom £5, for which you get 125 minutes, 2,000 texts and 200MB of data. For a tenner, you'll get 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 2GB of data. £15 will buy you 1,000 minutes, unlimited texts and 5GB of data, while at the top end unlimited minutes and texts plus 12GB of data will set you back £25.
