Gartner has forecast that the average family home could contain 500 smart devices by 2022.

As consumers warm up to concepts like the internet of things and connected household appliances over the next decade, the number of smart devices in the average family home will skyrocket.

This is according to Gartner, which published a new report yesterday (8 September 2014) forecasting that the number of devices used in the average household could hit 500 by 2022.

This will be driven by the addition of sensors and wireless connections to otherwise ordinary appliances, the research group stated.

"We expect that a very wide range of domestic equipment will become 'smart' in the sense of gaining some level of sensing and intelligence combined with the ability to communicate," said Nick Jones, Gartner Vice President and Distinguished Analyst.

He added that price "will seldom be an inhibitor", with the cost of the average smart device hitting 1 USD (£0.62) in the long term.

Gartner expects that the first fully smart homes will appear at some point between 2020 and 2025.
