Best broadband deals for September 2017

Wednesday, September 6th 2017 by Dan Howdle

Cable.co.uk announces its favourite broadband deals for September 2017. Among them Sky's cheapest deal ever – possibly the cheapest deal ever – along with strong entries in the form of freebie-laden deals from Vodafone and a Cable.co.uk exclusive offering the cheapest price on BT Infinity 1 currently available in the UK.

Cable.co.uk's in-house consumer telecoms expert, Dan Howdle, along with members of its crack deals-wrangling unit have hand-picked this month’s best in four categories: Cheapest broadband deal, best superfast deal, best deal without a landline and best deal with free gifts for new customers.

UK’s cheapest broadband deal: Sky Unlimited Broadband 17Mb, £15 p/m

Sky launched this deal at the start of the month. The deal, which costs £15 per month inclusive of line rental, is not only th cheapest ever offered by Sky, it may well be the cheapest broadband deal ever to appear in the UK, though these things are rather hard to judge in absolute terms due to inflation, cashback offers and other factors.

Sky is experiencing a few bugs on its website at the time of writing, causing customers to abandon the purchasing process in frustration. Hopefully Sky will have this sorted out very soon. Cable.co.uk considerered leaving this deal out of its line-up for this reason, but ultimately decided that the cheapest is the cheapest whether the means to get it is temporarily broken or not.

Best superfast broadband deal: BT Infinity 1 52Mb, £27.99 p/m, £50 off installation, £100 cashback

This deal is exclusive to Cable.co.uk and is the cheapest BT fibre deal in the UK right now. It should be noted that his deal ends this Friday, so there's not much time left to snap it up at the time fo writing.

At 52Mb, BT Infinity 1 offers an additional 14Mbps over competing packages, making it suitable for moderately large households of 3-5 people. The deal knocks £50 off the usual £59.99 fibre set-up fee and offers customers a £100 cashback reward in the form of a pre-paid Mastercard.

The deal comes with BT's market-leading Smart Hub router, which offers the UK's most powerful wi-fi signal. It also includes 100GB of cloud storage, free weekend calls and free BT virus protection on up to two computers.

Best broadband deal without a phone line: Virgin Media VIVID 50 – 50Mb broadband, £33 p/m, no calls (obviously)

Virgin Media is currently the only provider to offer broadband without a phone line (beyond satellite broadband and other fringe solutions). So you can take your pick from this deal, 100Mb or even 300Mb depending on your apetite for speed.

This deal is £33 per month – £1 more expensive than the deal above this one, which is also twice as fast and has free weekend calls. One thing to consider, however, is that this deal is £6 per month more expensive than if you have a phone line with free weekend calls.

It's odd, but Virgin Media would apparently rather you had a phone line, so charges a premium on the privilege of not having one.

Best broadband deal with free gifts: Vodafone 38Mb unilimited fibre, £25 p/m, selection of free gifts worth up to £199

Finally, the best free gifts are being offered by Vodafone this month, specifically in the form of a Sonos PLAY:1 wireless speaker worth £199. Should that not take your fancy you can optionally choose from one of the following: A TomTom Bandit action camera, a Fitbit Charge 2, Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC headphones or a £75 pre-paid Mastercard.

One thing to note about the Sonos speaker is that it can only be used to stream subscription music services – Apple Music, Amazon Music, Spotify and so on. It cannot be used as a general-purpose bluetooth speaker, so bear that in mind when choosing your gift.
