Broadband TV project YouView welcomes Google TV challenge

YouView welcomes forthcoming launch of Google TV

YouView has insisted it is looking forward to going head to head with Google TV.

Broadband TV project YouView has said it is relishing competition from rival internet protocol television platform Google TV.

YouView, which has the backing of major telecoms firms and broadcasters such as BT, the BBC and TalkTalk, was originally due to launch this year but is now not set to hit the market until early 2012 because of key personnel changes and a lengthy approval process involving the BBC Trust.

As a result of this delay, the product will become available around the same time as Google TV, which the search giant's executive chairman Eric Schmidt confirmed will be released in Europe towards the start of next year.

However, a spokesperson for YouView told TechRadar the organisation had been expecting Google's announcement and hailed the development as being positive for consumer choice.

"We are still on track to launch in 2012, when connected television will have relevance for mainstream audiences," they added.

Google TV is already available in the US but has so far failed to take off. Its release has sparked fears from some broadcasters and content providers about the company's intentions regarding its move into the television industry.
