BT boosts Superfast Cornwall fibre broadband coverage target
The Superfast Cornwall project is now set to bring fibre broadband to 95 per cent of properties.
BT has scaled up the coverage target of its Superfast Cornwall fibre optic broadband rollout to 95 per cent of homes and businesses across the county.
The project, a joint initiative involving BT, Cornwall Council and the EU, had originally set out to bring the technology within reach of at least 80 per cent of properties in Cornwall by the end of 2014.
BT explained it has achieved efficiencies - including pioneering innovations such as the use of lightweight overhead fibre optic cables - since beginning the deployment, allowing the telecoms giant and its partners to set a more ambitious target.
Openreach, BT's local access network business, has made strong progress on the scheme so far. More than half of Cornish premises have already been passed by the fibre broadband network and take-up of the service has been higher than in many other parts of the UK, with more than 20,000 customers signing up.
Creative Industries and Communications Minister Ed Vaizey welcomed the news, commenting: "It's fantastic that 95 per cent of homes and businesses in Cornwall are now set to reap the benefits of super-fast broadband following today's announcement."
