BT first UK service to offer Netflix in Ultra HD

Tuesday, December 22nd 2015 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

BT has become the first TV service in the UK to offer Netflix in Ultra HD.

The announcement of the 4K service comes just months after the launch of the UK’s first 4K channel – BT Sport Ultra HD.

Customers on BT TV’s Total Entertainment package who have a compatible 4K television will be able to access the £8.99 a month service via the new YouView+ Ultra HD set-top box.

That will give them on-demand access to shows including House of Cards, Marvel’s Jessica Jones and Better Caul Saul.

Delia Bushell, managing director of BT TV and BT Sport, said: “This is bringing our BT TV customers the best drama series married with the highest quality viewing experience now available.

“Our Ultra HD package will enhance the experience and provide unmissable content at great value, including must-see new Netflix shows like Narcos, and original series like Orange Is The New Black, alongside live action from the Barclays Premier League and UEFA Champions League and Europa League.

“We’re delighted to be offering our customers a wide range of incredible Ultra HD content with the convenience of a single bill.”

YouView’s CEO Richard Halton said: “We are delighted to upgrade Netflix building on the launch of the UK’s first Ultra HD set top box.

“We are very proud of our partnership with BT to deliver an even better service for BT TV consumers. It’s also a great testament to the team at YouView to deliver this in time for Christmas.”

Cable.co.uk has previously reported on research by analysis firm IHS Technology that predicted Netflix will have 100m global subscribers by 2018.

The report by IHS said the UK will be the number one market in Europe, with 7.1m subscribers by 2018.

Dan Cryan, senior director of media and content at IHS Technology, said: “Between now and 2019, we forecast subscriptions will grow by 22%, with 10m new subscribers to be added in the US."

IHS research director Ted Hall added: “International subscribers are key for Netflix.

“As Netflix invests more in international content, we expect to see huge growth in Western Europe over the next three years, with 10m new subscribers to be added to its already burgeoning international base.”
