BT launches new 'value for money' student broadband packages

Friday, August 14th 2015 by Ellen Branagh

BT has launched three new broadband packages specifically tailored for students living in shared households.

The new deals offer unlimited downloads and wi-fi access, as well as free BT Sport online.

BT said it has put the deals together based on feedback on last year’s popular nine-month student broadband deals.

The first new deal offers BT Unlimited Broadband for £12.50 a month on a nine-month contract plus line rental, giving speeds of up to 17Mb and unlimited download usage.

The second offers BT Unlimited Infinity 2, with speeds of up to 76Mbps, for £22.50 a month on a nine-month contract plus line rental, including unlimited download usage and free activation.

The third deal is BT Unlimited Infinity 2 and BT TV Entertainment Plus for £33 a month on a 12-month contract plus line rental.

The package includes superfast broadband with speeds of up to 76Mb, unlimited download usage, unlimited weekend calls, a YouView+ set top box and free activation.

BT TV Entertainment Plus gives customers the option to add BT Sport Pack for free, which includes 38 Barclays Premier League games and every game of the UEFA Champions League, as well as more than 80 Freeview channels, 25 Premium Channels, catch-up TV and TV Everywhere.

It also includes the BT SmartTalk app, which means customer aren’t charged for calls that are part of their home calling plan, such as 01, 02, 03, 0845 and 0870 numbers.

'Incredibly popular'

Each deal includes a BT Home Hub and access to unlimited BT Wi-fi.

Students who opt for the BT broadband-only packages will be able to use the BT Sport Lite app, which allows them to stream sport to their smartphones or tablets, or PCs or Macs using the online player.

Those who choose BT TV and broadband will get full access to the BT Sport Pack on their Youview+ box or by using the online player, as well as on the BT Sport app.

David McDonald, director of broadband at BT Consumer, said: “Our student broadband offers last year were incredibly popular.

“Building on the feedback we had, we’ve put together some really great superfast BT Infinity and BT Broadband deals this year including an option with BT TV and BT Sport.

“They’re fantastic value for money and they all come with a BT Home Hub, free BT Sport online or with the app, BT wi-fi at more than 5m UK hotspots and online storage with BT Cloud.

“And unlike some companies, we never throttle your broadband speed to slow you down.”

Last year, Cable.co.uk reported that BT had wrongly charged early termination fees to some students who signed up for nine-month contracts, after billing errors charged them for 12 months.
