BT launches ultrafast fibre broadband deals promising speeds up to 314Mbps

Tuesday, January 16th 2018 by Marc Shoffman

Slow internet is a peril of the modern age and now BT claims it is coming to the rescue with the launch of a range of fibre broadband deals offering a minimum 100Mbps speed guarantee.

BT is so confident about its Ultrafast Fibre deals that it is offering £20 compensation if a customer’s speed ever falls below 100Mb.

This can be tested by customers using BT’s speed checker and claimed online up to four times a year.

Ultrafast Fibre 1 offers up to 152Mbps broadband for £54.99 a month. For slightly more, Ultrafast Fibre 2 offers up to 314Mbps at £59.99.

Both contracts last for 18 months and include BT line rental.

You also get unlimited monthly use, free weekend calls, a BT Ultrafast Smart Hub and access to wi-fi hotspots. Both are also offering a £110 BT reward card for the next three days, although the pre-paid Mastercard won't just appear in the post. Once your broadband is up and running you'll need to fill in a claim form.

There is a catch though. This deal is limited to areas where BT is confident it can supply this service so you will need to enter your postcode first to see if it is available in your area.

Speeds up to 300Mbps for £42 on Virgin Media

If you can get it installed then this is a tempting offer, especially as other providers don’t set minimum speeds and will only tell you what you could get up to, so there is no guarantee.

This often means in busy periods your broadband could slowdown or just not work at all.

In comparison, Virgin Media offers speeds of up to 300Mbps on its VIVID 300 fibre broadband deal for £42 a month with a £20 setup fee for a 12-month contract. This doesn’t come with a phone package though.

Sky's Fibre Max deal offers speeds of up to 76Mbps and has an advertised average UK download speed of 57Mbps. It's currently £43.99 a month on an 18-month contract. This includes line rental but there is also a £59.95 one-off setup fee.

There's also £50 cashback included in the Sky deal. As with BT it comes in the form of a prepaid Mastercard, which you'll have to head to Sky's website to claim within 90 days of your broadband being activated.

Ultimately you will need to check the best speeds for your location and weigh up the costs to see which deal will work best for you.
