BT unveils preferred infrastructure service suppliers

A joint venture between Carillion and Telent will provide infrastructure services to BT on the BDUK rollout.

BT has named a joint venture between construction giant Carillion and technical systems firm Telent as its preferred supplier to support the rollout of the government's Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme.

The deal, which could be worth as much as £500 million, will see the companies work together to improve the broadband services received by 33 local authority areas over the next three-and-a-half years.

Their involvement in the project will see Carillion and Telent help BT with a range of infrastructure services, from civil engineering to cabling and poling.

Although it was only confirmed this week, the contract has been in the pipeline for months, having appeared as a "probable order" in Carillion's half-year results announcement in August.

It represents the latest tie-up between BT and the joint venture, which has been the telecoms provider's preferred supplier of infrastructure services since 2010.

Carillion Chief Executive Richard Howson commented: "We look forward to working with BT to deliver BDUK, which will make a vitally important contribution to improving the UK's broadband network and creating real benefits for the UK economy."
