BT seals 'historic' Norfolk super-fast broadband deal
BT is set to double the number of properties in Norfolk with super-fast broadband access over the next three years.
BT has announced an "historic" deal with Norfolk County Council that will see the telecoms giant aim to nearly double the number of homes and businesses in the area able to access fibre optic broadband.
The agreement will see the internet service provider conduct a series of upgrades across the county over the next three years, as part of the government's commitment to deliver the best super-fast broadband network in Europe by 2015.
Representing the culmination of two years of work by the council, the project is being supported by £15 million of government funding and aims to eliminate all broadband notspots in the area.
Over 80 per cent of local properties will be within reach of BT's super-fast broadband network once the rollout is complete. Without the council's intervention, estimates suggest only 43 per cent of the county would gain access to the service.
Communications Minister Ed Vaizey commented: "Today's announcement is wonderful news for the people of Norfolk who will see the number of properties with access to super-fast broadband doubled over the next three years."
Bill Murphy, BT's managing director for next-generation access, added the project will move Norfolk "well and truly into the broadband fast lane".
