Carphone Warehouse launches new 4G mobile network, iD
Carphone Warehouse has announced the launch of iD, a 4G mobile network promising “maximum control and flexibility without any fuss”.
The news will see the company enter the mobile virtual network (MVNO) market, using Three to carry its calls, texts and data.
Aimed at consumers who want more control over their mobile networks, and those who hope to avoid “nasty surprises” with their bills, iD will also offer free international roaming in 22 countries – the highest number available to consumers on any network.
iD customers will be able to roam for free in Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Spain and Sweden within the EU.
Other non-EU destinations include Australia and the USA.
Previously, customers on the Three network had the widest choice of roaming-enabled countries, with 10 in Europe and a further eight worldwide included as part of its 'Feel at Home' service.
Writing on the new iD website, Carphone Warehouse said that it surveyed the opinions of 3m mobile customers over the last 18 months to determine what people really want from a mobile phone deal.
Carphone Warehouse UK's CEO Graham Stapleton said: “We’ve been listening to our millions of customers’ network requirements and desires for years. In doing so we have identified some common challenges.
"People want greater flexibility from their plans and are fed up with the ‘one size fits all’ approach. In fact, a recent study by Which? found that overspend on mobile phone charges in the UK amounts to £5.42bn each year – showing just how many people aren’t on the right plan for them.
"We are also a generation obsessed with the mobile internet and accessing data and services on the move – things people are either paying too much for or just aren’t getting. Addressing these challenges forms the basis of the first wave of plans from iD.”
The first iD offer features the Samsung A3 on a 12 month 4G plan. Customers can get 300 inclusive minutes, 5,000 texts and 1GB data for £19.50 per month.
Cable.co.uk reported in July last year that Carphone Warehouse was in talks with Three about the formation of a new MVNO.
Pre-registration of interest is available on the iD website, with a mailing list promising updates, offers and information about the newly announced network.
Customers can sign up for iD contracts from next month at all Carphone Warehouse, Currys and PC World stores, as well as online.
The company now has approximately 800 outlets across the UK, and completed a £3.8bn merger with Dixons last year.
The first seven combined Dixons Carphone stores opened on 7 August 2014, with premises in London, Watford, Aylesbury, Banbury, Leamington Spa, Derby and Preston.
