Cheapest broadband deal right now: Sky unlimited 17MB, £18 p/m with free tablet or cashback

Friday, January 19th 2018 by Oprah Flash

Nobody likes the idea of parting with money, especially at this time of year. With broadband rapidly becoming as integral to your lifestyle as your utilities, you want to make sure you’re getting the best deal for the lowest price.

This is where Sky comes in. It is offering the cheapest way to get your hands on a basic broadband connection with either a free Samsung Galaxy Tab E or £50 cashback.

The Sky Unlimited Broadband package with download speeds up to 17Mbps costs £18 a month. This is over a 12-month contract – the shortest that Sky offers – and there’s a £19.95 fee to pay upfront to cover the cost of getting set up.

On top of this there are some freebies up for grabs. Sky has been giving away a prepaid £50 reward card with its broadband deals for a while. You can use it with any retailer that accepts Mastercard.

This is where things get a bit different. As a new offer, you can either choose the £50 cashback or a Samsung Galaxy Tab E. The 9.6-inch Android tablet has an RRP of £139.99 and comes with 8GB of storage and a 5MP rear camera. It’s not the most high-end tablet on the market right now but will be perfectly fine for keeping the kids occupied.

Free Samsung Galaxy Tab E or cashback

To claim your goodies you'll need to visit Sky's website within 90 days after your service is set-up. If you choose the reward card you'll have a year to use it before it expires. With the tablet, it should arrive within 28 days of your claim.

You can never guarantee that you’ll get the full 17Mbps, this is merely a guideline. What you do receive depends on a range of factors like where you live, when you use it and how many people in your household are using it at the same time. Sky advertises that you can expect to receive an average of 11Mbps.

Ofcom recently found that Sky had the lowest amount of customer complaints in the last quarter for it’s broadband services with only seven complaints for every 100,000 customers.

If you compare providers on Cable.co.uk you’ll see that Direct Save appears to be cheaper at £17.95 a month. Don’t worry, we do have access to a calculator and can see that it’s 5p less a month than Sky’s deal with a cheaper set-up fee of £8.95 but bear with us.

With Direct Save you’ll end up spending £224.35 over the course of your first year. This is undeniably cheap for a broadband package but once you factor in the £50 cashback from Sky, its package will end up costing you £185.95 by the end of your contract.

Good deal, how do I switch?

You have the right to cancel without being hit by a penalty if your current provider raises your monthly cost during the minimum term of your contract. In this case, you have 30 days from the moment you were notified of the changes to switch to another company.

If you are coming to the end of your contract or weren’t very happy with the recent BT price hike, now is a good time to shop around and switch. We have to admit Sky has a really good bargain at the moment so if you want to take up the offer, Sky has made the switching process pretty painless.

Switching from BT, EE, TalkTalk or Plusnet is simple. After you’ve confirmed your order the Sky Switch Squad will contact your provider for you, then two weeks later Sky will officially supply your broadband and talk.

If you're coming across from Virgin Media, it is a little bit trickier. After you place your order, the Switch Squad will turn on an inactive line if you have one. If you don’t they will organise for an engineer to install a new phone line. It’s your job to get in touch with Virgin Media to let them know you’d like to terminate your service.
