Chris O'Dowd comedy Get Shorty to make UK debut on Sky Atlantic

Thursday, May 31st 2018 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Sky TV viewers will be the first in the UK to see US comedy series Get Shorty as it premieres on Sky Atlantic next Wednesday (6 June) at 9pm.

The show, described a dark comedy, is based on the book of the same name by Elmore Leonard. A movie also based on the book was released in 1995 and starred John Travolta, Gene Hackman and Danny DeVito.

The new series stars Chris O’Dowd (The IT Crowd, Bridesmaids) as Miles Daly, a man attempting to leave behind his life as the muscle for a crime ring in Nevada and make it as a movie producer in Hollywood so he can be reunited with his estranged family.

In Hollywood he meets Rick Moreweather, played by Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond) a washed-up producer of bad films who reluctantly agrees to guide Miles through the world of show business.

Miles must keep his two worlds from colliding as he balances the demands of filmmaking with avoiding the suspicions of his crime boss Amara (Lidia Porto) and her dangerous nephew Yago (Goya Robles).

Second series

Get Shorty also stars Megan Stevenson as ambitious studio executive Apri Quinn, Carolyn Dodd as Miles’ daughter Emma, Lucy Walters as Miles’ estranged wife Katie and Seasn Bridgers as his criminal associate Louis.

The 10-episode first season must have been deemed successful by US network Epix as it has already been picked up for a second.

Sky Atlantic is already home to some of the most-watched programmes on TV including Game of Thrones and Westworld.
