Church tower helps bring superfast broadband to village
A fifth century church tower has been used to help deliver superfast broadband to a Bedfordshire village.
Residents of Dunton can now get speeds of between 60 and 80Mbps thanks to what has been called “a real triumph of people power”.
Telecoms firm Voneus worked closely with Virgin Media to establish a superfast wireless connection in the village.
Central Bedfordshire Council, Historic England and the local church council also played a part in bringing connectivity to Dunton.
A transmitter situated in nearby Biggleswade beams a connection directly from Virgin Media’s fibre network to a receiver on the tower of St Mary Magdalene Church in the village (pictured).
Broadband is then distributed throughout Dunton via eight smaller transmitters also attached to the church.
As well as providing fast internet speeds, the connection gives villagers access to internet-based phone services managed by Voneus.
Voneus sales director Gary Day said: “It was a pleasure to work on such an innovative project.
“St Mary Magdalene Church has been the focal point of community life in Dunton for centuries, and it’s great to see the tower now playing a vital role in providing the village with superfast broadband connectivity to the wider global community.”
Central Bedfordshire councillor Adam Zerny said: “Getting superfast broadband to Dunton has been a real triumph of people power.
“The Dunton Broadband Group found a determined and effective broadband installer in Voneus and the company has moved mountains to get the village connected.”
Alistair Burt, the MP for North East Bedfordshire, is expected to visit Dunton next week to discuss the success of the rollout.
