Comber in County Down to get ultrafast broadband from Virgin Media

Friday, April 27th 2018 by Oprah Flash

At the start of the year, Virgin Media announced it had increased its top speed to 350Mbps, and we can now confirm Comber, County Down is the latest town to receive an upgrade to ultrafast broadband.

As part of its Project Lightning network expansion programme, Virgin Media is rolling out fibre broadband to 3,300 homes and businesses in Comber, County Down.

Work has already started and the provider aims to completed by the end of 2019. According to an Ofcom Connected Nations Report published at the end of 2017, the area currently receives an average download speed of 31Mbps, so this upgrade will make connecting to the internet potentially 11 times faster.

11x faster broadband

Conor Harrison, regional director at Virgin Media, said: “Time-strapped families and small businesses across Comber will soon be benefiting from our brilliant broadband service. Giving them greater speeds will enable them to do the things they need to do and love doing more quickly and more easily.”

When the service is available, if you decide to sign up to Virgin Media’s top package, providing up to 350Mbps, the provider says you’ll be able to download a standard HD movie in two minutes compared to the 23 minutes you are probably used to now. Gamers will be able to download a 25GB game in just over 10 minutes.

At the moment, for those of you who can already get Virgin’s top speeds, it’s £42 a month over a 12-month contract. There is £20 to pay upfront to cover set-up costs.

Virgin Media isn’t the only internet service provider with a mission to increase the nation’s connectivity, this week Vodafone announced that together with CityFibre, it plans to bring Gigabit speeds to Coventry, Edinburgh, Huddersfield and Stirling.
