Demand for next-gen services spurs Virgin Media to create 150 apprenticeships

Virgin Media creating 150 new apprenticeships as demand for next-generation digital services continues to grow

Virgin Media has announced a new apprenticeship drive to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week.

Virgin Media is creating 150 new apprenticeships to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week as it strives to meet demand for its digital entertainment and super-fast broadband services.

The cable company's TiVo next-generation TV proposition saw its customer base expand by 187,300 in the fourth quarter of 2012, while the number of households signed up for broadband speeds of 30Mbps or more rose by 419,400 over the same period.

With an estimated 13 per cent of young people currently out of work, apprenticeship opportunities are increasingly being recognised as an important career step. Virgin Media's apprentice positions have proved extremely popular, with 50 people applying for every role created last year.

Three levels of apprenticeship are offered by the internet service provider, with starting salaries ranging from £11,000 to £17,000. Those taking part in the scheme learn how to install and service Virgin Media packages, as well as achieving a nationally recognised NVQ in communication technology.

Paul Buttery, Virgin Media's chief customer, technology and networks officer, said: "Apprenticeships effectively offer enthusiastic young workers a blank cheque of opportunity. They give a superb insight into our business."
