EE and Vodafone take top honours in mobile network tests

Wednesday, November 9th 2016 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

EE is the UK’s best mobile operator according to the results of a mobile network test – and shares the crown with Vodafone according to the results of another.

Two network testing companies – Global Wireless Solutions (GWS) and P3 – carried out separate tests on the UK’s four mobile networks throughout August and September, and published their results earlier this week.

GWS ran 987,000 data and voice task tests on iPhone 6s and Samsung S6s in 17 major cities.

EE performed best on its Overall OneScore ranking, which took into account both data and voice test performance, while Three was ranked top for voice quality and call performance.

EE also took top spot in the south of England for 4G connection time, while O2 outperformed its rivals in northern cities.

Paul Carter, chief executive of GWS, said: “For consumers and businesses alike, the question of which network best suits their needs is nuanced and depends on where you live, what you use your phone for and even which phone you use.

“Our independent test provides British consumers with an unbiased view as to which mobile network can best support their needs.”

P3 carried out tests on foot and in cars in a number of cities, as well as drivetests in smaller towns and on trunk roads and motorways.

'Validation'

Overall, EE and Vodafone tied for first place, with EE scoring highly on data performance and Vodafone performing well on voice tests.

Three scored best in voice tests on connecting roads and in smaller towns, while O2 performed well in voice tests conducted in London.

P3 said Vodafone achieved the biggest improvement on its 2015 score and that all four operators managed ‘good’ ratings for the first time.

Vodafone UK’s chief executive Nick Jeffery said: “We’re building the UK’s strongest network designed, site by site, to meet all of our customers’ needs, wherever they are.

“These results are a welcome validation that our massive investment programme is making a real difference for our customers.”
