EE best network for 4G coverage in most major UK cities

Thursday, April 6th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

EE is the best mobile network for 4G coverage in almost all of the UK’s major cities, a new report shows.

Mobile testing firm RootMetrics assessed 4G coverage in the UK’s 16 largest metro areas.

It found EE offered the most coverage in 13 areas and offers a similar coverage rate in Edinburgh to both O2 and Vodafone.

RootMetrics said it didn’t have enough samples to make accurate coverage assessments in Newcastle or Hull.

EE’s 4G coverage was above 90% in 11 of the 14 areas tested, only dipping as low as 86.5% in Cardiff.

In contrast, Three’s highest rate of coverage was 81.7% and the provider offered the lowest rate of coverage in all 14 areas.

O2 and Vodafone both had coverage rates of more than 90% in three places – Belfast, Liverpool and Manchester.

The need for 4G coverage is greater than ever, as research by giffgaff shows the average UK mobile user currently gets through 1.71GB of data a month – a figure that will rise to 5.07GB by 2021.

The mobile provider says the biggest growth in data usage will be in video streaming – from 0.83GB per user now to 2.85GB in four years’ time.

More than half (56%) of the 18 to 24-year-olds surveyed by giffgaff said they use the most data on social media while 30% of those aged 65 or above said messaging was their biggest use of data.

The results also suggested that the younger you are, the more likely you are to exceed your monthly data limit.

Of those aged 18-24, 14% said they exceed their allowance every month – more than double the number in any other age group.

Kim Faura, giffgaff’s chief commercial officer, said: “As global demand for mobile data increases, consumers need to be more aware of their data usage and ensure their mobile plans can adapt to meet their requirements.

“Our research showed many consumers infrequently used their text and minute allowances, the demand now is for more data to keep up with mobile technology.”
