EE's 4G home broadband antenna offers superfast speeds to rural homes
Fed up with poor broadband signal? EE claims to have come up with a solution if you are living in one of the more rural or hard to reach parts of the UK.
Broadband users in rural areas often suffer from slower speeds and poor connections as in some cases there is no access to a fixed phone line. This can make it hard to get standard broadband installed and you may need to rely on mobile versions instead. Many users in these parts of the UK struggle to get speeds above 10Mbps.
EE is now offering customers an external antenna and professional installation on its 4GEE Home pay monthly plan that has been shown to deliver speeds of more than 100Mbps.
The shoebox size device is simply attached to the outside of your home. The unit and installation costs £100. EE has been trialling the solution in the Northern Fells in Cumbria, an area with very poor signals, and says the area saw speeds boosted to above 100Mbps.
It predicts that there are 580,000 homes with slow or no fixed line access that could benefit from the solution.
UK's biggest 4G network
EE’s new antenna is fitted to the side of your property by EE’s professional installation provider and is connected to the 4GEE Home Router situated inside the home by a cable. This should eliminate any loss of signal due to thick exterior walls, improving both the speed and consistency of the 4GEE Home Router. The antenna has been designed for use on properties with good outdoor coverage but variable indoor coverage.
The £100 installation cost may sound like a lot, but it could be worth it for reliable internet. EE has the biggest 4G network in the UK, and it says it covers 95.23% of UK homes. Independent research shows its 4G network can provide download speeds of above 30Mbps on average so this should help boost those slow speeds.
You will need to be a customer on one of EE’s 4GEE Home monthly plans to get this antenna and the router, which lets you connect up to 32 devices.
These 4GEE Home plans start at £25 a month for 10GB of data on an 18-month contract or you could pay £35 for 50GB over the same time period. Both offers have no upfront costs.
You can boost your data to 200GB by paying £60 a month for 18 months. There are also 30-day deals starting at £25 a month and £99.99 upfront for 10GB or you could get 50GB for the same upfront cost and £35 a month. Alternatively, there is an option to pay £99.99 upfront and £60 a month for 200GB on a 30-day contract.
You can also get 10GB of data for 30 days on pay-as-you-go for £129.99.
If you buy a 4GEE Home Router and you've got an EE pay monthly mobile plan or a 12-month SIM plan, EE will also boost your monthly mobile data allowance by 5GB, worth £12.99 every month.
