EE launches 4G-enabled home router offering speeds up to 90Mbps

EE has launched a 4G home router aimed at people who live in areas with slow fixed line access.

The 4GEE router can connect up to 32 devices to EE’s 4G mobile network and promises speeds up to 90Mbps.

EE’s 4G coverage currently extends to 83% of the UK’s landmass and more than 99% of the population. The provider wants to reach 95% geographic coverage by 2020.

The 4GEE Home Router is EE’s first own-branded Cat 7-enabled mobile wi-fi device.

It is available on pay as you go for an upfront cost of £129.99 with 10GB of pre-loaded data.

Customers can also choose to take the 4GEE router on an 18-month contract and get 10GB a month for £25, 50GB a month for £50, 100GB a month for £75 or 200GB a month for £100.

Max Taylor, managing director of marketing at EE, said: “Our new 4GEE Home Router provides customers with a great alternative to fixed-line broadband using the UK’s fastest and most reliable mobile network.

“It’s simple to set up and use straight out of the box, so it’s ideal for customers with slower fixed line speed or people who regularly move house and need instant wi-fi connectivity.”

EE was named the UK’s best performing network by mobile testing firm RootMetrics in July.

The operator claimed UK-wide awards for speed, data and overall performance in RootMetrics’ report and was the best performing operator overall in England.

But EE didn’t have everything its own way, with Vodafone coming out on top in Northern Ireland and Three winning in Wales and Scotland.

Scott Stonham, general manager of Europe for RootMetrics, said: “EE continues to lead the way, but Three and Vodafone are close behind.

“What is clear is that each operator showed strong performance in at least one particular country, while nobody was able to sweep the board at the four-nations level.

“UK consumers have strong mobile options depending on how and where they use their devices most.”
