EE launches free portable smartphone charger

Thursday, April 2nd 2015 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

EE is to offer its customers a free portable smartphone charger.

The EE Power Bar will be available to pick up in EE stores when the promotion launches “in the coming weeks”.

It will come with a micro USB lead that can be used to charge your smartphone but also to charge the portable battery.

When the Power Bar has been used to charge a device, customers will be able to either charge it themselves or swap it for a fully charged one in any EE store – for free and as many times as they like.

It is two years since EE launched its 4G network and the company says network usage has grown “exponentially”.

Video streaming and social media engagement account for more than 50% of all data use on EE’s network, but come at a cost to battery life.

According to research by EE, nearly 60% of UK smartphone users claim their battery doesn’t last a full day.

The poll of 2,000 adults also found that half of smartphone users wish there were more ways to charge their phone in public places – rising to over 70% of 18-24 year olds.

Pippa Dunn, EE’s chief marketing officer, said: “Almost everyone’s experienced the frustration associated with running out of battery and it always seems to happen when you need your phone the most.

“With EE Power, we’re trying to help by giving our customers a Power Bar that can simply be swapped for a fully charged one at any of our stores, at any time, for free.”

When the promotion launches, EE customers will need to request a unique code by texting ‘POWER’ to 365 to be able to claim a Power Bar.

The offer will be available to all EE customers on 30-day, 12, 18 or 24-month plans for mobile or broadband services, and pay as you go customers who have been with EE for at least three months.

Non-EE customers can take part in the scheme for a £20 joining fee.

The Power Bar itself will feature charging indicator lights to show how much charge is in the battery and an LED torch.

It will take about four hours to charge the Power Bar from flat to full.
