EE launches new own-brand 4G smartphone
EE has unveiled what it claims is the UK’s most affordable 4G smartphone.
The Rook costs £39 for existing EE customers, although they will have to buy a £10 top-up at the time of purchase.
The new device is available to new EE pay as you go customers for £49.
According to EE, the Rook is the only new handset that allows customers to access 4G and costs less than £50.
With 44% of UK pay as you go customers spending up to £50 on a phone, EE says the Rook will open up access to its double-speed 4G network to more than 2.5m consumers.
The Rook uses the Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system and features a five megapixel camera, a 4-inch high resolution FWVGA display screen and 8GB internal memory.
This is powered by a 64-bit MediaTek 1GHz Quad-Core processor enabling faster web browsing, smoother game play, quicker multitasking and improved battery life.
The Rook also comes with a battery that provides more than five hours of talk time and more than 400 hours standby time on a single charge.
Sharon Meadows, director of devices at EE, said: “At EE, we believe everyone should have access to 4G and the experiences it offers on the go.
“The Rook provides a great 4G smartphone at a compelling price – allowing even more people to enjoy the benefits of our superfast mobile network from high speed web browsing and downloads to gaming and streaming.”
The Rook is the latest own-brand device unveiled by EE designed to give consumers access to its 4G network.
It follows the launch of the Harrier Tab last month – a tablet with an eight-inch HD screen available for £199.99 on pay as you go.
Earlier this year, the company launched the Harrier smartphone and Harrier Mini, as well as the Osprey 2 and Osprey 2 Mini – wi-fi devices that provide customers with a mobile internet hotspot.
As well as being on pay as you go, the Rook is available to EE corporate customers – offering a powerful and affordable smartphone for medium and large businesses.
Customers who buy a Rook handset can also benefit from up to a 20% discount on selected EE accessories.
