EE the UK’s first network to launch Enhanced HD Voice

Friday, September 22nd 2017 by Oprah Flash

EE has become the first network in Britain to provide the next generation of voice service, the Enhanced HD Voice.

With the new technology EE customers can make high quality phone calls on the latest smartphones that are able to use the service.

Enhanced HD is an upgrade on the HD Voice and standard voice systems that customers currently have and EE promises it will “improve the sound quality of phone calls”.

Customers can use the new service when making calls over 4G or wi-fi. It can also be used when calling another person with a handset that is Enhanced HD Voice enabled.

So far the Apple iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are the only devices with the capability to use Enhanced HD Voice but EE assures customers that more enabled smartphones will soon be on the market.

Max Taylor, the managing director of marketing at EE, said: “We launch the very latest technologies so that EE customers get the best performance on the latest smartphones.

“We already have 4G in more places than any other UK operator, and we have the fastest 4G speeds for streaming, downloading and sharing.

“Now we’re launching Enhanced HD Voice so that calls are of the highest quality and the most reliable they’ve ever been.”

'Best performance on the latest smartphones'

EE’s current 4G Calling technology is now used by more than five million customers making just over 300 million high quality calls each month.

Over the past few weeks EE has made a leap in new 4G related developments. Earlier this week Cable.co.uk reported on EE converting its 2G airwaves to 4G for faster download speeds.

By converting the airwaves EE is also hoping to improve the “most reliable” voice service on mobile phones.

Over the next six months more than 600 sites across the UK will be upgraded to the latest 4G spectrum. This will be rolled out in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and Cardiff.

Data upload speeds will be doubled from 50Mbps to a new maximum of 100Mbps.

The provider claims its 4G coverage extends to 85% of the UK’s landmass and EE plans to expand this to 95% UK geographic coverage by 2020.

Today the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are now available to buy from a range of providers.
