EFL highlights to be shown on Freeview channel Quest from 2018/19 season

Wednesday, May 9th 2018 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

EFL football highlights will be shown on Freeview channel Quest next season.

But while football fans will have to get used to scrolling to a different channel (or setting a new series record), some things will stay the same – presenter Colin Murray is moving across from Channel 5 and the show will keep its 9pm timeslot.

Quest says its new 90-minute Saturday night programme will show “extensive match highlights” from the Championship, League One and League Two over the next four seasons, although just how extensive the highlights can be when you’re squeezing upwards of 30 matches plus ad breaks into an hour-and-a-half show is debatable.

Rattling through every goal from Leagues One and Two in about half an hour has always been a bit of a tough watch even for the most hardened of Football League fans, with Channel 5 even calling this part of its coverage the “Goal Rush”.

Something Quest will be doing differently is showing every round of midweek games, in the form of 10 hour-long highlights shows, so every goal from every EFL fixture will be broadcast.

'Proper football'

There will also be eight hour-long programmes showing highlights from the Carabao Cup and Checkatrade Trophy throughout the season, plus a weekly interactive Facebook series called The Reaction, which will also be presented by Murray.

Discovery-owned Quest will be using Eurosport’s sports production expertise to show Home Nations snooker, cycling from the Giro d’Italia and British and World Superbike Championships as well as the football highlights.

Colin Murray said: “After a really good year, I’m delighted to stay as anchor for proper football! The most important things are the fans, the clubs and the players. We will be all about the football, from the results to the community around it.

“Working for the Discovery group before, I already know how serious they are about sport, and they’ll no doubt handle the EFL highlights with passion and expertise.”

EFL chief exec Shaun Harvey said: “This new partnership will provide excellent coverage of EFL football for supporters of our clubs on a free-to-air platform at a primetime slot of 9pm on a Saturday evening.

“As an experienced broadcaster, clubs and their fans will be able to access high quality coverage on a channel that is committed to making the EFL highlights programme one of its flagship shows, led by the talented and respected host in Colin Murray, who has become a strong advocate for the work the League is undertaking both on and off the pitch.

“Quest is the largest channel in the Discovery portfolio with over 12 million people tuning in each month and alongside the rights based programming, they will utilise their existing and emerging digital platforms to enhance the experience for fans to help tell the EFL story as the new season starts to unfold.”
