Feeling left out? A third of Brits pretend they've watched TV shows

Wednesday, June 29th 2016 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

A third of Brits pretend to have watched TV shows so they don’t get left out of conversations, new research has revealed.

A study by TalkTalk TV Store found that 42% of Brits have felt left out when people are discussing a programme they haven’t watched.

In a bid to appear in the know among family and friends, 31% have simply pretended that they have seen the show.

The show that seems to get most people talking is Game of Thrones – whether you’ve seen it or not.

Two thirds (66%) of those surveyed by TalkTalk said they feel the need to join in conversations about dragons, White Walkers and the fate of John Snow, despite not having watched a single episode.

The research follows the launch of TalkTalk TV Store, which allows customers to stream, rent, buy and download movies and TV shows on a pay as you go basis.

Users can choose whether to download an episode at a time or go for an entire box set.

Aleks Habdank of TalkTalk TV, said: “We know that TV series are a hot topic of conversation, yet it’s easy to fall behind and feel left out when it’s all anybody is talking about.

“For the many Brits worrying that they may have to go on pretending they’ve seen Game of Thrones, fear not.

“TalkTalk TV Store is all about offering people more choice and flexibility at great value. That’s why we’ve made it a great place for people to watch the movies and TV shows they love on their terms, all at Britain’s lowest price.”

TalkTalk TV Store is open to everyone – not just existing TalkTalk customers, although they are able to get more out of it.

They will be able to rent or buy a show on their TV then switch to a mobile device to watch the same show.

Viewers will be able to register up to five devices to their account, and watch one film or programme on their TalkTalk TV while streaming or downloading another on their mobile, laptop or tablet.

Existing TalkTalk customers will also be able to access the new service using their existing TalkTalk login details and purchases will be added directly to their monthly bill.
