Fibre broadband will make Kirklees one of world's most 'digitally advanced places'

Thursday, June 18th 2015 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Huddersfield town centre is to benefit from gigabit speeds after the first part of a fibre broadband rollout was completed.

Infrastructure provider CityFibre is rolling out a pure fibre network with the aim of making Kirklees one of the best digitally connected regions of the UK.

The network will initially serve businesses and public sector sites through Yorkshire-based service provider Abzorb, with CityFibre expected to announce more partners in the near future.

The rollout has reached 20% deployment, meaning gigabit speeds will be available in Huddersfield town centre from September.

The network will be extended across the town over the next 12 months.

Jacqui Gedman, director of economy, skills and the environment at Kirklees Council, said the project would allow Kirklees to compete with cities across the world.

“This is our opportunity to make Kirklees one of the most digitally advanced places in the world, with connectivity on a par with major international centres," she said.

“Our ambition for this project is huge and I would encourage local businesses not to miss out on this opportunity to get ahead in today’s digital age.

“We have established and growing technology and media businesses in the region, who obviously rely on fast, reliable connectivity.

'Megabit to gigabit'

It is also "vital" to the growth of the region's manufacturing businesses and other sectors, giving them the competitive advantage that greater speeds and bandwidth can bring, she said.

“This is a great opportunity for all businesses to take advantage of this new technology.”

So far, more than 250 local businesses have registered their interest in the scheme.

Registration is not an obligation to take the service, but by registering organisations can signal their desire to be included in the network route.

Registered businesses will also be checked for eligibility for a government voucher scheme that offers financial grants to cover connection costs.

Abzorb sales director Faruk Amin said: “We’re very excited to be partnering with CityFibre on this fantastic opportunity for Kirklees.

“Businesses will soon be able to benefit from internet speeds they have only dreamed of.

“Abzorb will be supporting local businesses in the transition from megabit to gigabit speeds with a variety of next generation solutions – everything from VoIP to cloud based applications and remote backups.”

CityFibre’s regional development manager for Kirklees, Jason Petrou-Brown, added: “We are delighted that construction work has begun, and our carefully planned rollout will start to bring gigabit connectivity to business from September this year.

“It’s great to have Abzorb, a Yorkshire based service provider with over 20 years experience serving local and national businesses, on board and offering services today.

“We urge businesses to register their interest on the Kirklees CORE website, to take advantage of this opportunity to increase their productivity and profitability.”
