BT has signed on to bring superfast broadband to rural communities in Berkshire.

BT has bagged another contract under the publicly-funded Broadband Delivery UK scheme - this time an £8 million deal that will bring fibre connectivity to rural communities in Berkshire, it was revealed today (7 October 2013).

The project, which will be undertaken alongside Superfast Berkshire - a coalition of local authorities and the Thames Valley Local Enterprise Partnership - will expand superfast broadband coverage to 91 per cent of homes and businesses in the county.

This represents a four per cent increase on the 87 per cent of Berkshire properties currently connected, or around 18,000 locations in total.

Most of these premises will benefit from Fibre to the Cabinet, which is capable of delivering downstream speeds of up to 80Mbps. If all goes to plan, the first raft of homes and businesses should be able to connect by autumn 2014.

Communications Minister Ed Vaizey welcomed the contract signing, describing it as "the start of a remarkable transformation" for Berkshire.

"The UK already does more business online than any other European country and widespread access to superfast speeds will provide a welcome boost to Berkshire's economy," he commented.
