Existing ducts are being used to introduce a new wholesale fibre network in Hammersmith and Fulham.

Fluidata has announced plans to launch a cost-effective wholesale fibre optic network for Hammersmith and Fulham by re-using existing ducts in the area.

The pioneering project, which will be conducted in conjunction with next-generation infrastructure builder ITS Technology Group, is to be supported by Fluidata's award-winning Service Exchange Platform – capable of aggregating demand for wholesale bandwidth to more than 60 internet service providers.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has become the first English local authority to offer up access – on a rental basis – to all 15km of underground ducting through which its CCTV network runs.

Under the terms of the agreement, ITS will cover the cost of access rights and will also share a proportion of future profits with the council.

Piers Daniell, Fluidata's Managing Director, said the company is "delighted" that ITS' infrastructure will be connected into the existing Service Exchange Platform – which he noted is the largest of its kind, with more than 16 networks linking into it.

"The work ITS is doing really ensures that customers have a genuine alternative to the larger incumbent provider," Mr Daniell added.
