Freesat launches new 'affordable' set-top box recorder
Subscription-free satellite TV service Freesat has launched what it says is its most affordable set-top box recorder.
The new box gives consumers an "affordable alternative" as households bills – and particularly pay TV prices – continue to rise across the UK, Freesat said.
It comes with Freetime, which allows users to pause, rewind and record, as well as watch programmes from the past seven days through its roll back TV guide.
The Humax Freesat HDR-1100S also features catch-up players including BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, All4, Demand 5, YouTube and Curzon Home Cinema.
It comes with access to more than 200 channels, integrated wi-fi and the TV recommendation service Showcase.
It can also be paired with the Freesat app so customers can plan their viewing and set recordings on the move.
The box is priced at £189 for a 500GB hard drive, £219 for the 1TB version and £299 for 2TB.
Paul Gilshan, Freesat’s marketing director, said: “As household bills continue to rise across the UK, particularly pay TV prices, we’re proud to launch a compact and low cost recorder that gives consumers an affordable alternative all for a one off cost with no monthly subscription.
“With Freetime, customers can enjoy the flexibility of a connected service along with a huge range of content.”
Humax commercial director Graham North added: “With the ever-increasing consumer demand for the connected home, there was an absolute necessity to incorporate wi-fi within the new Humax Freesat Freetime family.
“The new box adds even more appeal to the popular Freetime service, allowing great streaming and on-demand content to be easily accessible.
“Its compact size and range of colours provide further value and choice to consumers, making it a must-have product for home entertainment.”
Cable.co.uk previously reported that Freesat had seen its biggest ever growth in viewer numbers in the first three months of this year.
The service added 12,000 new customers in the first quarter of 2015 – more than double the number it added in the same period in 2014.
The rise took the total number of Freesat customers to 1.9m households across the UK.
Alistair Thom, Freesat’s managing director, said: “I’m thrilled to report another strong quarter for Freesat that clearly demonstrates the continuing growth and strength of the UK’s free-to-air proposition.”
