Get cheap cinema tickets with a free Popcorn Pass from O2
O2 is giving you the chance to claim discounted cinema tickets for up to two years when you buy a new phone or SIM-only plan.
Until 3 January the provider is giving away Popcorn Pass memberships , which give you up to 40% off the cost of cinema tickets across the UK.
Taking out a phone on a 24-month O2 Refresh contract of at least 1GB will entitle you to a 24-month Popcorn Pass membership, while a 12-month SIM-only contract at 10GB or above gets you a 12-month membership. If you buy a phone from O2 on pay as you go, you’ll get a six-month pass.
You’ll get a membership code with your purchase, after which you’ll have until 31 January to claim your Popcorn Pass. O2 is also offering four times the amount of data with selected handsets on pay monthly deals, including the iPhone 6, Sony Xperia XZ1 and OnePlus 5, until 20 December.
This means you can currently get the iPhone 6, which is a couple of generations old in Apple terms but still a good phone, with unlimited calls, unlimited texts and 40GB of data instead of the usual 10GB for £40 a month and no upfront cost.
On the same tariff the Sony Xperia XZ1, which was launched only a couple of months ago, is £49 a month and £9.99 upfront. O2 says this also represents a saving of £24 on the price of the handset.
You can also get the OnePlus 5, which has dual 16MP and 20MP rear cameras and a 16MP front camera, with 50GB of data instead of the usual 10GB for £9.99 upfront then £51 a month.
Pay as you go bargains that would bag you a free six-month cinema pass include the easy-to-use Doro Primo 805 flip-phone for £19.99, the entry-level Moto C smartphone for £69.99 and a 2016 Samsung Galaxy J3 for £79.99.
To get a 12-month Popcorn Pass you’ll need to sign up to a SIM-only plan of at least 10GB, although we’re not entirely sure why O2 has chosen 10GB as the cut-off point considering its current options jump from 6GB to 15GB with nothing in the middle.
Anyway, the 15GB plan will cost you £35 a month but it clearly makes much more sense to get the 20GB plan, which is quite a bit cheaper at £20 a month. If you’re a heavy data user the 30GB plan might be better for you – it’s £42 a month.
