Giffgaff is selling pre-owned iPhones for less than a fiver a month

Wednesday, November 15th 2017 by Oprah Flash

Giffgaff has launched a Marketplace for cheap, pre-owned handsets, where you can get an iPhone 5S for £3.68 a month.

With the recent release of the iPhone 8, shortly followed by the iPhone X, it seems everyone is catching 'iPhone fever'.

If you don’t want to miss out on getting your hands on an iPhone but don’t quite have £999 to splash on brand new handset, a second-hand phone could be the answer.

Research suggests almost half of the British population are turning to second hand devices to save money so you are not alone in trying to save your pennies in the run up to Christmas.

All of giffgaff’s handsets are unlocked, fully tested and have had the data removed. If there is something wrong with the phone you can get it repaired under a six-month warranty.

The provider says you can make a saving of up to £20 if you make a purchase before Wednesday 6 December. You'll only be paying for the cost of the handset so for data, minutes and texts you'll have to get one of giffgaff's SIM-only goodybags.

Giffgaff has broken down the condition of the handsets into three categories, good, very good and excellent.

Good means the phone is fully functioning but may have a little wear and tear. There may be a few scratches and scuffs on the exterior but they don’t have any effect on how the phone works.

Very good means you can tell it’s not shiny and brand new but there are only minor external marks around the edges.

Just as you may expect, giffgaff deems a phone to be excellent if it looks almost like you’ve brought it brand new, with no marks or scratches at all. Most likely the previous owner would have used a case and screen protector straight after taking it out of the box.

The iPhone 5S in good condition from giffgaff costs £99 outright or you can spread the cost over 24 months and pay £25 upfront then £3.68 a month. It has 16GB of internal storage and comes in Gold, Silver or Grey.

An iPhone 6 costs £179 from Giffgaff

For more storage you can get the phone with 32GB for £159 or £6.66 a month over two years with £25 upfront.

You’ll have to keep on eye on this phone as it seems to go in and out of stock quite quickly.

A pre-owned iPhone 6 with 16GB storage costs £179 outright. Alternatively you can buy it on a pay monthly basis by initially paying £25 upfront then £7.65 a month. It comes in 'good' condition so may have a few scratches.

Standing at 4.7 inches, it packs an 8MP iSight camera with focus pixels and 1080p HD video at 60 frames per second.

This is the first of Apple’s phones to incorporate Touch ID, where you unlock the phone with just your fingerprint. You can also choose from the same three colours as the iPhone 5S.

For a slightly more recent handset the iPhone 6S (16GB) in good condition will cost you £229 or £10.13 a month over 24 months.

If you’re wondering how this handset is any different to the iPhone 6 you’ll find the answer in the newer 3D Touch feature, 12MP camera and A9 chip that makes the phone run faster and more smoothly than the older handset.

Still not taken on the idea of a pre-owned phone? You can get a brand new iPhone 6 for £329 from giffgaff. The iPhone 6S costs £379.
