Gigaclear commits £6.2m to extend ultrafast rollout in rural Kent
Rural broadband provider Gigaclear has announced plans to roll out ultrafast services to some 4,500 premises in Kent by 2020.
The company is committing a further £6.2m to its rollout in the area, taking its total investment in communities east of Sevenoaks to more than £8m.
Construction will get underway in the coming weeks, with Hildenborough, Crouch and West Peckham the first areas to be connected. Gigaclear connected its first Kent property in the village of Underriver in 2014 and has since reached Godden Green, Dunks Green and Paxtol.
Joe Frost, Gigaclear’s business development director, said: “We have many very happy rural customers in Kent who are already benefiting from the UK’s fastest broadband.
“This new investment will enable us to expand our reach in the county, increasing the number of areas that can profit from the economic benefits ultrafast broadband provides. This will allow more rural businesses to thrive and residents to do more online, potentially reducing the need to commute for example.”
Mike Clyne, an Underriver resident who led the campaign for ultrafast broadband in his village, said the arrival of speeds up to 1Gbps had made a huge difference to villagers.
'Reap the benefits'
“Before Gigaclear, we were really struggling with unpredictable and slow connections. Even simple online actions, such as using online banking or ordering tickets for a concert, could be very difficult to complete.
“Being connected to ultrafast broadband has modernised our village; it has been extremely beneficial to the local schools, has helped children in the village with their education, given commuters the chance to work from home and allowed many people to take advantage of a vast world of entertainment.
“We are delighted to hear that Gigaclear is expanding its network in Kent, so other villages like ours can reap the benefits of an ultrafast reliable connection.”
In a further boost to connectivity in Kent, Virgin Media has announced this week that it has completed a rollout in Margate and Ramsgate, taking its services to a further 4,900 premises.
Virgin’s work means residents of Birchington, Garlinge, Newington, Northwood and Westgate on sea can now sign up to ultrafast broadband speeds up to 350Mbps.
